Content ArticlePatients' self‐management practices have substantial consequences on morbidity and mortality in diabetes. While the quality of patient‐physician relations has been associated with improved health outcomes and functional status, little is known about the impact of different patient‐physician interaction styles on patients' diabetes self‐management. This study, published by the US Journal of General Internal Medicine, assessed the influence of patients' evaluation of their physicians' participatory decision‐making style, rating of physician communication, and reported understanding of diabetes self‐care on their self‐reported diabetes management.

BMJ: Safe handover (October 2017)
PatientSafetyLearning Team posted an article in Research papers
High quality handovers are essential for safe healthcare and are used in many clinical situations. Miscommunication during handovers can lead to unnecessary diagnostic delays, patients not receiving required treatment, and medication errors. Miscommunication is one of the leading causes for adverse events resulting in death or serious injury to patients. The process of handovers can be improved, and the aim of this article is to provide practical guidance for clinicians on how to do this better.- Posted

Content ArticleEffective communication is critical to successful large-scale change. Yet, in our experience, communications strategies are not formally incorporated into quality improvement frameworks. The 1000 Lives Campaign was a large-scale national quality improvement collaborative that aimed to save an additional 1000 lives and prevent 50 000 episodes of harm in Welsh health care over a two year period. This research, published in the Journal of Communication in Healthcare, used the campaign as a case study to describe the development, application, and impact of a communications strategy embedded in a large-scale quality improvement initiative.

Content ArticleSpreading successful improvement work across the NHS is an essential part of improving health care quality and efficiency. Yet all too often an idea that has been shown to work well in one place is not adopted by others who could benefit from it. This guide from the Health Foundation, intended for those actively engaged in health care improvement, draws on this experience and empirical evidence, to provide practical information about how communications approaches can be used to spread improvement ideas.

Content ArticleA bold, original book that sheds new light on our understanding of the role courage plays in healthcare. Critically analysing both the positive and negative implications of the presence of courage in delivering care, the authors present literature, theory, and detailed examples from practice, including whistleblowers' own accounts of courage-demanding situations. With a view to promoting better patient outcomes, well-being for practitioners, and support for those who feel compelled to ‘speak out’ and challenge bad practice, Courage in Healthcare is an invaluable resource for any healthcare practitioner working in the NHS today, a rallying call and a practical guide.
