Digital transformations are well underway in all areas of life. These have brought about substantial and wide-reaching changes, in many areas, including health. But large gaps remain in our understanding of the interface between digital technologies and health, particularly for young people. The Lancet and Financial Times Commission on governing health futures 2030: growing up in a digital world argues digital transformations should be considered as a key determinant of health. But the Commission also presses for a radical rethink on digital technologies, highlighting that without a precautionary, mission-oriented, and value-based approach to its governance, digital transformations will fail to bring about improvements in health for all.

Breaking down the barriers between organisations is key to the successful development of integrated care systems (ICSs), and the underpinning digital transformation that their introduction demands. Digital transformation can become the foundation of partnership working across health, social care, local government, and wider partners – including those in the voluntary, community and social enterprise, and private sectors – as place-based approaches to delivering care develop. This session from The King's Fund will explore what is being done to create collaborative digital strategies at ICS level that enable practical and flexible ways of working between partners. It will discuss how best to harness and use the data the system already holds, and how partnerships can move beyond barriers around data sharing, co-ordination and workforce capacity. Register

Digital has been an area of focus in the NHS for a number of years, and is a key feature of the NHS Long Term Plan. The Government's new plan for digital health and social care further recognises its role in transforming the NHS, building on the What Good Looks Like Framework. But do members of the UK public want digital tools as part of their support from the NHS? To better understand the nation’s true opinions, ORCHA has again this year commissioned independent research to ask 2,000 UK residents what they think. In this webinar, ORCHA's Director of Research, Dr Simon Leigh, and Clinical Director, Dr Tom Micklewright, will discuss this research in detail. We'll also hear from industry experts including Helen Hughes, Chief Executive at Patient Safety Learning, Richard Stubbs, CEO at Yorkshire and Humber AHSN, and Miles Sibley, Director at Patient Experience Library. Discover: What are patient attitudes towards digital health in the UK? How is digital health usage changing? Are people finding digital health helpful? Which regions are most activated in terms of digital health? How does the NHS influence the public's digital health choices? Register for the webinar

NHS hospital staff spend countless hours capturing data in electronic prescribing and medicines administration systems. Yet that data remains difficult to access and use to support patient care. This is a tremendous opportunity to improve patient safety, drive efficiencies and save time for frontline staff. I have just published a post about this challenge and Triscribe's solution. I would love to hear any comments or feedback on the topic... How could we use this information better? What are hospitals already doing? Where are the gaps? Thanks

The new Health and Care Bill gives NHS Digital powers to create a new ‘medicine registry’ The bill, published earlier this month, will allow NHS Digital to collect a range of information about the use of medicines and their effects in the UK and hold this data in one or more information system(s). The MHRA would be able to then use the information held in an information system to establish and maintain comprehensive UK-wide medicines registries. “This would improve post-market surveillance on the use [of] medicines. For example, where a safety issue has led to the introduction of measures to minimise risk to patients, registries would facilitate the early identification and investigation of potential noncompliance so that additional action can be taken by regulators in conjunction with health service providers at a national, local, or individual patient level.” The notes added the power is “restricted to purposes relating to the safety, quality and efficacy of human medicines and the improvement of clinical decision-making in relation to human medicines”. Anybody who inappropriately shares NHS data collected for the new registry could face a fine and a prison sentence. What does this mean for patient safety? What impact will this has on the NHS and for private providers? @Helena Gregory. @Kathryn Howard, @Kristen, @Alison Smith, @Phaeds, @CYC, @Dakota, @Steve Turner

I am currently working to develop a new process for the investigation of incidents related to digital healthcare, something which clearly sits outside of the usual framework or process of investigating traditional patient safety incidents. I would be grateful for opportunities to discuss and share experiences and ideas with others. If you have already investigated these sort of incidents what sort of approach did you utilise and have you reviewed it post event in respect of effectiveness. @Keith Bates Clive has suggested it would be beneficial for us to discuss?

Subject: Looking for Clinical Champions (Patient Safety Managers, Risk Managers, Nurses, Frontline clinical staff) to join AI startup Hello colleagues, I am Yesh. I am the founder and CEO of Scalpel. <www.scalpel.ai> We are on a mission to make surgery safer and more efficient with ZERO preventable incidents across the globe. We are building an AI (artificially intelligent) assistant for surgical teams so that they can perform safer and more efficient operations. (I know AI is vaguely used everywhere these days, to be very specific, we use a sensor fusion approach and deploy Computer Vision, Natural Language Processing and Data Analytics in the operating room to address preventable patient safety incidents in surgery.) We have been working for multiple NHS trusts including Leeds, Birmingham and Glasgow for the past two years. For a successful adoption of our technology into the wider healthcare ecosystem, we are looking for champion clinicians who have a deeper understanding of the pitfalls in the current surgical safety protocols, innovation process in healthcare and would like to make a true difference with cutting edge technology. You will be part of a collaborative and growing team of engineers and data scientists based in our central London office. This role is an opportunity for you to collaborate in making a difference in billions of lives that lack access to safe surgery. Please contact me for further details. Thank you Yesh yesh@scalpel.ai

Healthcare is where the "most exciting" opportunities for artificial intelligence (AI) lie, an influential MP has said, but is also an area where the technology's major risks are illustrated. Greg Clark, chairman of the Commons Science, Innovation and Technology Committee (SITC), said the wider adoption of AI in healthcare would have a "positive impact", but urged policy makers to "consider the risks to safety". He said: "If we're to gain all the advantages, we have to anticipate the risks and put in place measures to safeguard against that." An interim report published by the Science, Innovation and Technology Committee sets out the Committee’s findings from its inquiry so far, and the twelve essential challenges that AI governance must meet if public safety and confidence in AI are to be secured.

In January 2023, NHS England’s Delivery plan for recovering urgent and emergency services committed the health service to ease the growing pressure on hospitals by scaling up the use of ‘virtual wards’. Also known as ‘hospital at home’, virtual wards allow people to receive treatment and care where they live, rather than as a hospital inpatient, while still being in regular contact with health professionals. This article by The Health Foundation looks at how NHS staff and the UK public feel about the use of virtual wards, based on the results of a survey of 7,100 members of the public and 1,251 NHS staff members. The survey aimed to assess how supportive these groups are of virtual wards and what they think is important for making sure they work well.
