Content ArticleDigital transformations are well underway in all areas of life. These have brought about substantial and wide-reaching changes, in many areas, including health. But large gaps remain in our understanding of the interface between digital technologies and health, particularly for young people. The Lancet and Financial Times Commission on governing health futures 2030: growing up in a digital world argues digital transformations should be considered as a key determinant of health. But the Commission also presses for a radical rethink on digital technologies, highlighting that without a precautionary, mission-oriented, and value-based approach to its governance, digital transformations will fail to bring about improvements in health for all.

The Healthy Data e-consultation is a joint initiative run by the Belgian project 'Towards the development of a national health data platform' (AHEAD) and the European initiative 'Towards a European Health Data Space' (TEHDAS). Its aims are: to listen to citizens and patients’ views on health data secondary use and sharing, and on the role that they would like to play in the management and use of their health data. to increase citizen awareness, engagement and empowerment on the topic, so that everyone can develop informed opinions and take an active role in the use of their health data. Anyone can sign up and share their views on the following questions: What should your health data be used for? Under which conditions should your health data be used? How would you like to be informed and involved in the reuse of your health data? What other ideas do you have on health data reuse? -
Content ArticleThe NHS Race & Health Observatory (RHO) has published a rapid review into ethnic health inequalities across a range of areas. This report is the first of its kind to analyse the overwhelming evidence of ethnic health inequality through the lens of racism. The NHS has longstanding problems with ethnic inequalities in terms of access to, experiences of, and outcomes of healthcare. These issues are rooted in experiences of structural, institutional and interpersonal racism. The review focussed on priorities set by the RHO relating to ethnic inequalities in: mental healthcare maternal and neonatal healthcare digital access to healthcare genetic testing and genomic medicine the NHS workforce.

It builds on the same prescribing indicators as PINCER and is a pharmacist-led intervention using audit and feedback. In this 1-hour webinar, we will showcase the new dashboard which utilises the GMCR BI Analytics Platform and provide an overview on how it works, and how it differs from the current platform. We will share the journey the SMASH has been on to this point, and the benefits it will now bring to the GM system. Better use of data for medication safety in hospitals

NHS hospital staff spend countless hours capturing data in electronic prescribing and medicines administration systems. Yet that data remains difficult to access and use to support patient care. This is a tremendous opportunity to improve patient safety, drive efficiencies and save time for frontline staff. I have just published a post about this challenge and Triscribe's solution. Community PostThe new Health and Care Bill gives NHS Digital powers to create a new ‘medicine registry’ The bill, published earlier this month, will allow NHS Digital to collect a range of information about the use of medicines and their effects in the UK and hold this data in one or more information system(s). The MHRA would be able to then use the information held in an information system to establish and maintain comprehensive UK-wide medicines registries. “This would improve post-market surveillance on the use [of] medicines. For example, where a safety issue has led to the introduction of measures to minimise risk to patients, registries would facilitate the early identification and investigation of potential noncompliance so that additional action can be taken by regulators in conjunction with health service providers at a national, local, or individual patient level.” The notes added the power is “restricted to purposes relating to the safety, quality and efficacy of human medicines and the improvement of clinical decision-making in relation to human medicines”. Anybody who inappropriately shares NHS data collected for the new registry could face a fine and a prison sentence. What does this mean for patient safety? I would be grateful for opportunities to discuss and share experiences and ideas with others. Content ArticleHealthcare is where the "most exciting" opportunities for artificial intelligence (AI) lie, an influential MP has said, but is also an area where the technology's major risks are illustrated. Greg Clark, chairman of the Commons Science, Innovation and Technology Committee (SITC), said the wider adoption of AI in healthcare would have a "positive impact", but urged policy makers to "consider the risks to safety". He said: "If we're to gain all the advantages, we have to anticipate the risks and put in place measures to safeguard against that." An interim report published by the Science, Innovation and Technology Committee sets out the Committee’s findings from its inquiry so far, and the twelve essential challenges that AI governance must meet if public safety and confidence in AI are to be secured.

Content ArticleIn January 2023, NHS England’s Delivery plan for recovering urgent and emergency services committed the health service to ease the growing pressure on hospitals by scaling up the use of ‘virtual wards’. Also known as ‘hospital at home’, virtual wards allow people to receive treatment and care where they live, rather than as a hospital inpatient, while still being in regular contact with health professionals. This article by The Health Foundation looks at how NHS staff and the UK public feel about the use of virtual wards, based on the results of a survey of 7,100 members of the public and 1,251 NHS staff members. The survey aimed to assess how supportive these groups are of virtual wards and what they think is important for making sure they work well.
