    Co-production is a way of working that involves those who use health and care services, carers and communities, in equal partnership. It engages groups of people at the earliest stages of service design, development and evaluation. Co-production acknowledges that people with lived experience of a particular condition are often best placed to advise on what support and services will make a positive difference to their lives. In this blog post, Helen Lee from NHS England's Experience of Care Co-production Programme talks about work her team has been doing to put co-production at the centre of quality improvement, including the launch of a new suite of materials. These resources aim to encourage professionals and leaders to expect to hear a range of experiences and be curious and open minded to these views.

    This joint conference hosted by The Mental Health – Time for Action Foundation and Safely Held Spaces is aimed at stimulating discussion and promoting change in the way mental health services view the role of the family in the therapeutic process. Going beyond the “carer-patient” model, the conference brings into focus the broader perspective that mental health is not just an individual concern but involves the whole family system. Recognising the importance of the family system’s wellbeing promotes a more holistic approach to mental health.     The director of the Modernisation Agency in the early 2000s is returning to lead a new national service improvement drive, NHS England has announced, while asking systems and providers to “baseline” their improvement needs and capability. NHSE is establishing a “national improvement board” to oversee a new improvement programme called NHS Impact, as recommended by a review last year of the current infrastructure. NHSE announced the board will be chaired by David Fillingham, who was director of the NHS Modernisation Agency from 2001-2004 where, NHSE said, “he focused on developing new practices and fostering leadership development”. The national improvement board will choose a small number of improvement priorities to be followed across national bodies and the wider health service.     A casually centred proposal identifying how Fire and Rescue Services can improve pre-hospital care and quality of life outcomes for burn survivors.  David Wales and Kristina Stiles have released this report looking at the burn survivor experience in the pre-hospital environment. The work makes ten operational recommendations and also two 'lessons learned' recommendations exploring strategic partnership working and the resulting fragmented services.

    Patient engagement refers to “meaningful and active collaboration in governance, priority setting, conducting research and knowledge translation,” where patient partners are members of the teams, rather than participants in research or those seeking clinical care. It appears more has been written on the benefits rather than the risks of patient engagement and the authors in this study feel it is important to document and share what they call ‘patient engagement gone wrong.’ The authors anonymised these examples and sorted them into four statements: patient partners as a check mark, unconscious bias towards patient partners, lack of support to fully include patient partners, and lack of recognizing the vulnerability of patient partners. These statements and their examples are meant to show that patient engagement gone wrong is more common than discussed openly, and to simply bring this to light.

    There are an estimated 363,000 adults experiencing multiple disadvantage in England—they may be experiencing a combination of homelessness, substance misuse, mental health issues, domestic abuse and contact with the criminal justice system.     New research showed how a national quality improvement programme called PReCePT (Preventing Cerebral Palsy in Pre Term labour) accelerated maternity units’ use of Magnesium sulphate for pre-term labour. The programme could serve as a blueprint for future efforts to get clinical guidelines into practice in other areas of care. The quality improvement programme involved training staff on the benefits of magnesium sulphate, and having a local midwife dedicated to encouraging and monitoring use of the medicine at their maternity unit. The programme was supported by Academic Health Science Networks (a regional and national organisation that encourages improvement and innovation in healthcare).  This article from the National Institute for Health and Care Research provides a plain English summary and short film about the project.

    David Gilbert is a writer and health activist. He was the first patient director in the healthcare system. He is a mental health service user with 40 years of experience in healthcare, specialising in patient and public engagement and coproduction. He helped pioneer the concept of patient leadership and authored ‘The Patient Revolution - how we can heal the health care system’. That's why we created the hub; to provide a space for people to come together and share their experiences, resources and good practice examples. We’ve selected twelve useful resources about diabetes. Self-management is perhaps the most important aspect of treating diabetes effectively, so we've included some resources aimed at helping patients manage their diabetes too. Diabetes is a condition that causes the amount of glucose in a person's blood to be too high. When you have type 1 diabetes, your body can’t make any insulin at all, whereas with type 2, you either can’t make enough insulin, or it can’t work properly. There are also other types of diabetes including gestational diabetes, which some women develop during pregnancy, maturity onset diabetes of the young (MODY) and latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA). It is important that people with diabetes are supported to maintain good blood glucose control through diet, insulin and other diabetes medications, to prevent both acute and long-term complications,

They aim to help people in policy and practice understand recent important research in a topic area. The most recent Collection is Maternity services: evidence for improvement.     An NHS-Led Provider Collaborative is a group of providers of specialised mental health, learning disability and autism services who have agreed to work together to improve the care pathway for their local population. They will do this by taking responsibility for the budget and pathway for their given population. The Collaborative will be led by an NHS Provider who remains accountable to NHS England and NHS Improvement for the commissioning of high-quality, specialised services. These Collaboratives aim to ensure that people with specialist mental health, learning disability and autism needs experience high quality, specialist care, as close to home as appropriately possible. They seek to enable specialist care to be provided in the community to prevent people being in hospital if they don’t need to be, and to enable people to leave hospital when they are ready. This webpage explains the role of NHS-Led Provider Collaboratives and includes case studies that demonstrate how they are helping to transform specialised mental health services.
