It does not cover the management of post-traumatic stress disorder in secondary care; or the management of anxiety, depression, drug or alcohol misuse, dissociative disorders, or adjustment disorders.

    Anxiety is a feeling of unease, like a worry or fear, that can be mild or severe. Everyone feels anxious from time to time and it usually passes once the situation is over. It can make our heart race, we might feel sweaty, shaky or short of breath. Anxiety can also cause changes in our behaviour, such as becoming overly careful or avoiding things that trigger anxiety. When anxiety becomes a problem, our worries can be out of proportion with relatively harmless situations. It can feel more intense or overwhelming, and interfere with our everyday lives and relationships. This self help guide, produced by Southern Health and Social Care Trust, explains what anxiety is, why it occurs and how to manage anxiety.

    Mental health nurses have a crucial role in preventing medical incidents and in promoting safety culture because they provide and coordinate most of patients' care. Therefore, they are able to enhance patients' outcomes and reduce nurses' injuries. The aims of this study from S H Hamaideh in International Nursing Review were to assess the perception of mental health nurses about patients' safety culture and to detect the factors which may affect patients' safety culture at psychiatric hospitals.

    A study of police wearing body worn cameras showed a reduction in complaints, and a decrease in occurrences and crimes. Mental health staff working in inpatient settings do not routinely wear cameras. The aim of this project, published in Mental Health in Family Medicine, was to examine the feasibility of using body worn cameras in an inpatient mental health setting. The results found that both staff and patients considered that their use in an inpatient mental health setting was beneficial. Compared to the same period the year before, there was a reduction in complaints and incidents during the duration of the pilot.

Revered doctors are those that work above and beyond the hours they are paid for, that come in even when they are sick, that prioritise work over their families, over sleep and their own health. Doctors that are kind and compassionate but that don’t allow themselves to be affected by their experiences. Doctors that would go from one cardiac arrest to the next without letting their judgement cloud or their actions falter.”  This blog by Dr Natalie Ashburner who is the Doctors Association UK (DAUK) Editor emphasises the importance of doctors speaking up about their mental health.

    The Right Honourable Sir Anthony Hooper was asked by the General Medical Council (GMC) on 5 September 2014 to conduct an independent review of how the GMC engage with individuals who regard themselves as whistleblowers. The terms of reference were: “To conduct a review of how the General Medical Council handles cases involving individuals who regard themselves as whistleblowers and who have appropriately raised concerns in the public interest. These are individuals: whose fitness to practise is being investigated or determined under the General Medical Council (Fitness to Practise) Rules 2004; or who have reported such a concern to the GMC.” This is the report by the Right Honourable Sir Anthony Hooper to the GMC presented on the 19th March 2015.

    The management of occupational health, safety and wellbeing is now central to the effective running of the NHS. There is strong evidence linking patient safety, patient experiences and the quality of care with the safety, health and wellbeing of the workforce. The Boorman review into the health and wellbeing of the NHS workforce clearly illustrates this link. However, looking after the health and wellbeing of staff is far more than supporting staff to develop health lifestyles: there is a legal duty to protect the health and safety of staff as detailed in the NHS Constitution. The NHS Staff Council’s Health, Safety and Wellbeing Partnership Group (HSWPG) have developed these standards through national partnership working to support NHS organisations in meeting their legal duties to protect staff from injury and illness.

    THIS Institute at the University of Cambridge has undertaken a rapid response project to develop an ethical framework for COVID-19 testing for NHS workers. It sought to identify and characterise the ethical considerations likely to be important to the testing programme, while recognising the tension between different values and goals. The project was guided by an expert group and by an online consultation exercise held between 27 May and 8 June 2020 to characterise the range and diversity of views on this topic. The 93 participants in the consultation included NHS workers in clinical and non-clinical roles, NHS senior leaders, policy-makers, and relevant experts. The project report emphasises that getting the COVID-19 swab testing programme for NHS workers right is crucial to support staff and patient safety and broader public health. It also recognises that COVID-19 does not affect all population groups equally. People who are socio-economically disadvantaged or members of Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) groups may face distinctive issues in relation to testing.

    During the COVID pandemic, it was clear that Emergency Departments across the UK needed to adapt and quickly, with my trust not exempt from this. We have increased capacity, increased our nursing and doctors on the shop floor, obviously with nurse in charge being responsible for all areas. We have different admission wards in terms of symptoms that the patient has, but also have a different type of flow, which i am getting my head around to be able to share I have seen departments split into 2 and various other ideas coming out from various trusts. Which got me thinking about patient safety and how well this is managed. So.... How is your department responding to the pandemic? Do you have any patient safety initiatives as a result of the response? Is there a long term plan? The reason why i am asking this, is so we can share practice and identify individual trust responses.

    HOW SAFE ARE OUR GP PRACTICES during covid-19? For the health care professionals, their patients, and families of patients? I'm a 65-yr old diabetic needing routine B12 injections. My GP tells me to turn up as normal so I don't develop neurological problems. I don't think anyone in the practice has been tested for covid-19. I'm refusing to turn up since I suspect the GP practice to be a covid-19 hot-spot. I don't want to transmit this virus to my frail, elderly asthmatic husband who's undergone cancer treatment and a lot of surgery. I've persuaded the GP to give me a precription for oral B12. Have I done the right thing? How can I help GPs and patients in far worse dilemmas than mine?
