Content ArticleThis report states that patient and public engagement has been on the NHS agenda for many years, but the impact has been disappointing. There have been a great many public consultations, surveys, and one-off initiatives, but it argues that the service is still not sufficiently patient-centred. In particular, it looks at a lack of focus on engaging patients in their own clinical care, despite strong evidence that this could make a real difference to health outcomes. This paper argues that a more strategic approach is required to create the necessary shift in beliefs, attitudes and behaviours.

Content ArticleThe Safer Nursing Care Tool has been developed by the Shelford Group to help NHS hospital staff measure patient acuity and/or dependency to inform evidence-based decision making on staffing and workforce. The tool, when allied to Nurse Sensitive Indicators (NSIs), offers nurses a reliable method against which to deliver evidence-based workforce plans to support existing services or to develop new services. The Shelford Group is an organisation comprising Chief Executives of 10 of the leading NHS multi-specialty academic healthcare organisations in England. The Chief Nurses of each of these NHS Trusts belong to a subgroup of the organisation and they meet every two months to share best-practice, benchmark and work towards improving standards in nursing.

In her latest blog for the hub, topic lead Eve Mitchell discusses what we need to do as we plan for recovery post-covid. Despite an apparent increase in interest in joining the nursing profession since the start of the pandemic, the reported 40,000 gap in nursing numbers is not going to be closed overnight and we therefore need to plan for different, re-think roles and responsibilities, and capture and capitalise on the innovations that have flourished in some areas. As we begin to reorient, revise our goals and focus on moving beyond rather than on just ‘getting by’, it is important that we look at all settings of care so we can learn from excellence, build on the best and support a faster response in the future if required. -

Content ArticleThis inquiry looked at the current and future scale of the shortfall of nursing staff and whether the Government and responsible bodies have effective plans to recruit, train and retain this vital workforce. It assessed the impact of new routes into nursing (including student funding reforms, the Apprenticeship Levy, Nurse First and nursing associates). In particular, the inquiry examined the effect of changes to funding arrangements for nurse training, including the withdrawal of bursaries, and consider alternative funding models and incentives.

NICE guidance, advice, quality standards and information services for health, public health and social care. Guidance also contains resources to help maximise use of evidence and guidance. This guideline (NG89) covers assessing and reducing the risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE or blood clots) and deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in people aged 16 and over in hospital. It aims to help healthcare professionals identify people most at risk and describes interventions that can be used to reduce the risk of VTE.

Matrons Handbook (January 2020)

The matron's role has evolved since publication of the matron's 10 key responsibilities in 2003, and the matron's charter in 2004. Some aspects remain the same: providing compassionate, inclusive leadership and management to promote high standards of clinical care, patient safety and experience; prevention and control of infections; and monitoring cleaning of the environment. The role has also grown significantly, to include: workforce management, finance and budgeting, education and development, patient flow, performance management and digital technology and research. Using the handbook This handbook is a practical guide for those who aspire to be a matron, those who are already in post and for organisations that want to support this important role. It can be used to prepare ward, department and service leaders for the matron's role and to support newly appointed matrons. Individual matrons can use this handbook to support their practice, and as part of their professional development discussions with their employer. Directors of nursing can use this handbook to support matrons and the development of those who aspire to this role. The Oxford Simulation, Teaching and Research (OxSTaR) website hosts resources and educational material for different areas of healthcare with in the Oxford University Hospitals, including; Theatres Intensive Care Resuscitation Maternity General wards areas OxSTaR (Oxford Simulation, Teaching and Research) is based at the John Radcliffe Hospital. The centre provides a state of the art environment where medical students and multidisciplinary healthcare professionals can use adult and paediatric high fidelity patient simulators to rehearse a wide variety of medical scenarios. -
Content ArticleThis free course from the World Health Organization includes content on clinical management of patients with a severe acute respiratory infection. It is intended for clinicians who are working in intensive care units (ICUs) in low and middle-income countries and managing adult and paediatric patients with severe forms of acute respiratory infection (SARI), including severe pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), sepsis and septic shock. It is a hands-on practical guide to be used by healthcare professionals involved in clinical care management during outbreaks of influenza virus (seasonal) human infection due avian influenza virus (H5N1, H7N9), MERS-CoV, COVID-19 or other emerging respiratory viral epidemics. Learning objectives: By the end of this course, participants should possess some of the necessary tools that can be used to care for the critically ill patient from hospital entry to hospital discharge. Course duration: Approximately 10 hours. Target audience: This course is intended for clinicians who are working in intensive care units (ICUs) in low and middle-income countries.

Content ArticleHealth Education England (HEE) commissioned the Royal College of Physicians (RCP) to undertake the development of a training programme to meet the medical needs of adults with a learning disability. The training programme consists of two modules and applicants are expected to complete both modules which will result in a post graduate certificate. The second module is under development but will be available in the autumn of 2023. Funded places for both modules are available.
