PRSB wants to help every person share information about ‘what matters to me’ by using PRSB’s About Me standard.     Medicines play a crucial role in maintaining health, preventing illness, managing chronic conditions and curing disease. However, there is a growing body of evidence that shows us that there is an urgent need to get the fundamentals of medicines use right. Medicines use today is too often sub-optimal and we need a step change in the way that all healthcare professionals support patients to get the best possible outcomes from their medicines. Medicines optimisation represents that step change. It is a patient-focused approach to getting the best from investment in and use of medicines that requires a holistic approach, an enhanced level of patient centred professionalism, and partnership between clinical professionals and a patient. Medicines optimisation is about ensuring that the right patients get the right choice of medicine, at the right time.

    In this article for The Guardian, Dr Kara Thompson, an obstetrician and gynaecologist working in the public hospital system in Geelong and Melbourne, Australia, argues that women must be given clear and unbiased information in order to make informed decisions about their birth preferences. She highlights the case of an information brochure about caesarean birth published on the website of a hospital in New South Wales, which presented incorrect claims about the relative risks presented by vaginal and caesarean birth. She outlines how the leaflet indicates that the way women are informed about birth choices is still subject to fear-mongering and shaming, and highlights the need for healthcare workers to respect maternal choice and autonomy.

    In April 2022, Whose Shoes were invited to run a workshop in Croydon in support of the HEARD campaign - Health Equity and Racial Disparity in Maternity. Women and families from Croydon came together to talk to healthcare professionals about what makes a difference in maternity care, and raising awareness of some of the issues faced by people from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic communities - not just the 'service users' but staff experiences too.

    Type 1 diabetes is a life-long condition that causes the level of glucose in a person’s blood to be too high. It is caused by the body’s immune system attacking the cells in the pancreas that produce insulin, the hormone that allows the body to use glucose as energy. It cannot be cured, and people with diabetes need to inject or infuse insulin multiple times a day to control their blood sugar levels. Peer support communities can help people with type 1 diabetes to manage their condition safely and feel less isolated. In this blog, Paul Sandells, a diabetes peer supporter and advocate, talks about the important role of peer support in helping people with type 1 diabetes improve their blood glucose control and deal with the burden that diabetes can place on daily life.

    This study from McQueen et al. explored what ‘good’ patient and family involvement in healthcare adverse event reviews may involve. Nineteen interviews were conducted with patients who had experienced an adverse event during the provision of their healthcare or their family member.

    This qualitative descriptive study in the journal BMC Nursing aimed to analyse the experiences of patients with type 2 diabetes during the stay-at-home order in place during the first wave of the Covid-19 pandemic. It looked at the experiences of ten patients with type 2 diabetes living in Catalonia and identified the strategies and resources they used to manage their care. The study found that many people with type 2 diabetes reported effective self-care during confinement and were able to adapt well using the resources available, without face-to-face contact with primary care health staff.

    Maternal outcomes for Black women are significantly worse than for white women - Black women are four times more likely to die during pregnancy, labour, or postpartum and are twice as likely to have their baby die in the womb or soon after birth. They are also at an increased risk of readmission to hospital in the six weeks after giving birth. This report by the organisation Five X More presents the findings of a survey into black women's experiences of maternity services in the UK. The survey aimed to understand how maternity care is delivered from the perspective of women from the Black community, and 1,340 Black and Black mixed women responded, sharing their experiences. It seeks to highlight the real life encounters behind the known disparities in maternal care. Women reported far more negative experiences than positive, and most of these experiences centred around interactions with healthcare professionals. The authors highlight three factors related to healthcare professionals that contribute to damaging interactions, to do with their attitudes, knowledge and assumptions. The report includes many quotes from Black women about their experiences of NHS care and the damaging long-term consequences of this, such as fear of having another baby, reluctance to engage with health services and mental health issues.

    In this three-year strategy, NHS Resolution outlines its strategic priorities to 2025. The four priority areas in the new strategy are: Deliver fair resolution – focussing our resources to avoid patients and healthcare staff having to go through formal processes that can be distressing and costly Share data and insights to improve services – sharing our unique data and insights to reduce risk and help improve the healthcare system Collaborate to improve maternity outcomes – working with others in the maternity care system to reduce neonatal harm Invest in our people and systems – building up our corporate capacity and capabilities internally to support the health and legal systems. These priorities aim to help the organisation contribute to: a reduction in harm to patients. a reduction in the distress caused to patients and healthcare staff involved when a claim or concern arises. a reduction in the cost required to deliver fair resolution. This will release public funds for other priorities, including healthcare. ensuring indemnity arrangements are a driver for positive change across the healthcare system. NHS Resolution has also produced a video summary of the strategy.

    Personalised care and support planning (PCSP) is a systematic process based around 'better conversations' between the person and their health and social care practitioners. The aim is to identify what is most important to each person for them to achieve a good life, and to ensure that the support they receive is designed and coordinated around their wishes. It's goal is to empower people to be the main decision-maker in their own care, and to arrive at one plan that encompasses all the person's care needs.     Adverse drug reactions (known as ADRs) can occur both in the home, and within the healthcare setting, when combinations of medications produce unexpected side effects. Unfortunately this means that in the most serious cases fatalities can occur. However ADRe has helped all service users by addressing life-threatening problems, reducing pain or improving quality of life. With preventable ADRs responsible for 5-8% unplanned hospital admissions in the UK, and costing the NHS up to £2.5bn pa, it is crucial that healthcare organisations take advantage of tools which can help improve how medicines are managed. ADRe has been developed with the aid of nursing professionals to help nursing staff take a structured approach to the monitoring of medicines, identifying any ADRs service users may be experiencing, and then making changes to improve a patients' health and wellbeing.

    For people who have been diagnosed with dementia, accessing post-diagnosis support can be challenging, particularly when the systems meant to provide support are confusing, limited or in some areas, non-existent. The World Alzheimer Report 2022 looks at the issues surrounding post-diagnosis support, a term that refers to the variety of official and informal services and information aimed at promoting the wellbeing of people with dementia and their carers. This report explores the aspects of living with dementia following diagnosis, through 119 essays written by researchers, healthcare professionals, informal carers and people living with dementia from around the world. These expert essays are accompanied by the results of a survey carried out in May 2022, with responses from 1,669 informal carers in 68 countries, 893 professional carers in 69 countries and 365 people with dementia from 41 countries.

    The opioid epidemic is a major public health concern in the US—according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 70,630 people died from drug overdoses and 10.1 million people misused opioid prescriptions in 2019 alone. There are also an estimated 180,000 serious opioid-related adverse events in inpatient settings recorded annually. This blog by Dr Diane Perez, advisory board member at the Patient Safety Movement Foundation, looks at how patients and their families can get involved in solving the opioid epidemic. Opioids are potent pain relievers so it is critical that anyone that has a prescription be properly informed about the potential risks–both in and out of the hospital setting.

    Picker, an international charity working across health and social care, have published the results of their National Cancer Patient Experience Survey. Almost 60,000 people responded to the survey, which was coordinated by Picker on behalf of NHS England and conducted between October 2021 and February 2022. The survey included people aged 16 years and over with a confirmed primary diagnosis of cancer and who had been treated in hospital between April and June 2021.
