Content ArticleThis post is a transcript of an interview on Times Radio Breakfast on 7 September 2023 in which Dr Jane Somerville, Emeritus professor of cardiology at Imperial College, was asked if the Lucy Letby case has uncovered a problem of the difficulties doctors have of voicing their concerns in hospitals. In the interview, Dr Somerville refers to systemic persecution of NHS staff who speak up about patient safety. She goes on to identify the key issues of power; cover-up culture; suppression of complaints/concerns; career-ending reprisals against staff who speak up; and the almost universal failure of employment tribunals to protect whistleblowers.

Barclay: I’m fighting doctors’ pay demands for the sake of NHS staff
Patient Safety Learning posted a news article in News
The government is resisting what it believes are inflationary pay demands from junior doctors for the sake of NHS staff, health and social care secretary Steve Barclay has told HSJ. In a wide-ranging interview, Mr Barclay also: Rejected the idea that it would be impossible to hit the prime minister’s waiting times pledge without settling the junior doctors strike; Defined what he believed was the difference between good and bad management; Refused to apologise to the 123 trusts whose bids for “new hospital programme” funding were rejected. News ArticleThe BBC has come under fire from scientists for interviewing a cardiologist who claimed certain Covid vaccines could be behind excess deaths from coronary artery disease. Experts have criticised Dr Aseem Malhotra’s appearance on the BBC's news channel last Friday, accusing him of pushing “extreme fringe” views, which are “misguided”, “dangerous” and could mislead the public. Scientists have described the doctor as “hijacking” an interview on statins to air his views, causing BBC staff to be “alarmed and embarrassed” by their booking. Malhotra recently retweeted a video by the MP Andrew Bridgen, who had the Tory whip removed on Wednesday after comparing the use of Covid vaccines to the Holocaust. After criticising new guidance on statins, he cited British Heart Foundation (BHF) figures that suggested there had been more than 30,000 excess deaths linked to heart disease since Covid first arrived. Malhotra, a cardiologist at ROC Private Clinic, claimed mRNA Covid vaccines play a role, saying his “own research” showed “Covid mRNA vaccines do carry a cardiovascular risk”. He added that he has called for the vaccine rollout to be suspended pending an inquiry because of the “uncertainty” behind excess deaths. Read full story Source: The Guardian, 13 January 2023

Content ArticleIn this interview for The Guardian, Pat Cullen, General Secretary of Royal College of Nursing (RCN), talks about how RCN members are being forced to use food banks, her frustration with the government and how she learned to be a tough negotiator. She discusses the issues that led to nurses balloting to strike—violence, sexual assault, unsafe staffing levels and pay that has not kept up with inflation—and outlines the difficult realities of being a nurse in the NHS. She also describes the negotiations with the Government, who according to Cullen, refused to discuss nurses' pay.

Human factors for emergency response and critical care
Patient Safety Learning posted an article in Techniques
In this blog post, Liv System’s Nigel Scard talks with Courtney Grant, a Senior Human Factors engineer with Transport for London (TfL). Nigel and Courtney worked together for a number of years at TfL on a number of station and line upgrade projects. Content ArticleAndrew Morgan joined United Lincolnshire Hospitals in 2019, when the organisation was in double special measures and dealing with the fallout of another critical Care Quality Commission report. His route to the role was slightly unconventional. Already chief executive of Lincolnshire Community Health Services Trust, he was asked to come in to help stabilise the acute trust by Elaine Baylis, who chaired both organisations. He tells HSJ about joining an organisation “where the culture and leadership needed to be looked at”, about what has changed, and about what more remains to be done.
