    The AHSN Network comprises 15 AHSNs across England, established by NHS England in 2013 to improve health and generate economic growth in regionally distinct ways. In 2021, they launched their five-year strategy where they set out their ambition to support the NHS through an increased emphasis on health outcomes, their innovation pipeline, and by using knowledge and learning to build and embed greater momentum for NHS pathway transformation.     It is estimated that across the UK, a third of healthcare improvement projects never spread beyond their particular unit, a further third are embedded across their organisation but never spread further than that, and only the final third are spread across their own and other similar organisations. Successfully spreading improvements and ensuring changes are sustained requires overcoming numerous challenges, such as: Creating an awareness of why the change is needed Ensuring those involved have a desire to support and participate in the change Knowledge of how to bring about change The skills and resources to bring about the change Ensuring processes to sustain the change This new guide from the West of England AHSN sets out suggestions to be considered for the successful adoption and spread of innovation and improvement projects.

    A rapid-learning report on the role of Patient Safety Collaboratives (PSCs) during the pandemic has been published by the AHSN Network. PSCs are just one part of the health and care system which responded quickly to the immediate crisis from COVID-19 in March. They reprioritised their day-to-day work and took on new programmes at speed, such as promoting safer tracheostomy care. The report has been published as part of the NHS Reset campaign and gives examples of how PSCs refocused their work ‘almost overnight’ to respond to the pandemic. It illustrates some of the creative ways AHSNs supported their local systems and how this experience will be built into future patient safety programmes.

    The Oslo Medicines Initiative: “better access to effective, novel, high-priced medicines – a new vision for collaboration between the public and private sectors” is a new initiative of WHO/Europe, developed together with the Norwegian Ministry of Health and Care Services and the Norwegian Medicines Agency. The Initiative will provide a neutral platform for the public and private sectors to jointly outline a vision for equitable and sustainable access to effective, innovative and affordable medicines.

    Patient Participation Groups (PPGs) are generally made up of a group of volunteer patients, the practice manager and one or more of the GPs from a practice. PPGs meet on a regular basis to discuss the services on offer, and how improvements can be made for the benefit of patients and the practice. The Patients Association has produced this set of videos and resources for PPGs, including: information on why GP practices and Primary Care Networks need patient groups step-by-step guide to establishing a GP patient group reasons to have a patient group and what’s in it for the GP practice and patients effectively working together in partnership recruitment, increasing diversity and communicating with the wider patient population.

It is based on the principle that healthcare workers should 'Ask, listen, do', in order to shift the power to the person who knows best about the help or support needed - whether that be the person with a medical issue or the clinicians providing care. WMTY conversations help healthcare teams understand what is “most important” to patients, leading to better care partnerships and improved patient experience.     Public satisfaction with the NHS is currently at a 25-year low, and lack of effective communication and engagement with patients has contributed to this dissatisfaction. In this blog, Lucy Watson, Chair, and Rachel Power, Chief Executive of The Patients Association, reflect on the findings of the Ockenden Report and the implications for patient trust in the NHS. They highlight the immense damage to trust caused by the combination of the hospital's substandard clinical care, lack of compassion, tendency to blame mothers and unwillingness to respond to concerns. The authors argue that listening to and better engaging with patients is essential to create the culture change the NHS needs to rebuild public trust and improve safety. They call for honest and transparency about how the NHS is coping, and for more action to tackle low staff morale.

Developed by the National Co-production Advisory Group set up by the organisation Think Local Act Personal, it supports greater understanding of the various steps that need to happen in co-production, such as access, inclusion and consultation.     The Covid-19 pandemic has presented new challenges for patients with non-communicable diseases (NCDs) as healthcare systems experience increased resource constraints, conflicting priorities, challenges related to emerging or re-emerging diseases, and difficulties in prioritising NCD services. This report summarises a World Health Organization (WHO) meeting held in December 2020 that aimed to harness the power of community knowledge to tailor priorities, programmes and practices for NCDs and mental health, so that they are realistic, appropriate and attractive to the target populations. Patient experts and representatives with NCDs addressed the following questions: What does meaningful engagement mean? How do we engage meaningfully? Where do we go from here?
