If medication is not given in accordance to their routine, this may result in people being: unable to swallow (increasing the risk of aspiration) unable to speak and/or move (increasing their dependence on staff) At worst, Parkinsonism-hyperpyrexia syndrome (also called neuroleptic-like malignant syndrome) may develop which can be fatal. This statement from Parkinson's UK, aims to answer the question: For inpatients with Parkinson’s who need medication to manage their symptoms, what are the key issues that need to be addressed throughout their hospital admission and how can these be best managed? If it is possible that you will see an inpatient who has Parkinson’s, this statement is for you.

Content ArticleBarrie Housby had a medical history that included frailty, Parkinson’s disease and macular degeneration. During a stay at Clifton Hospital he was known to be at high risk of falls and at the beginning of the nightshift on 12 July 2021, it was advised that he should be cared for on a one to one basis and not left unattended. During the shift, a member of staff allocated to monitor him left the bay to attend to other duties, and in this time Mr Housby left his bed and fell. He was transferred to a hospital emergency department but subsequently died on 13 July 2021 as a result of a traumatic subdural haemorrhage following a fall. In his report, the Coroner Alan Wilson highlights the impact of staffing shortages at the Trust and their contribution to Mr Housby’s death, stating that this poses an ongoing risk to patient safety.

NHS England: Time-critical medication webinar

untilThe webinar will be aimed at all Nursing and Midwifery professionals in all healthcare settings. It will look at time-critical medication and improving practice in this area, with a particular focus on medication for Parkinson’s Disease and Diabetes. The webinar will draw on expertise in Pharmacy, Nursing, Midwifery and other specialists such as Parkinson’s UK (charity) and their patient led campaign, which links to the focus on Personalised Care in the NHS Long Term Plan. There will be presentations from patient representatives who will share their experience of receiving time critical medication in healthcare settings and experts in this area. The design of the webinar has taken a collaborative approach - with the co-design taking place between NHS England, subject matter experts, clinicians and patient representatives. The codesign process will involve nursing, medical and pharmacy staff in discussion and feedback on processes for safely delivering time critical medication. Better use of data for medication safety in hospitals

NHS hospital staff spend countless hours capturing data in electronic prescribing and medicines administration systems. Yet that data remains difficult to access and use to support patient care. This is a tremendous opportunity to improve patient safety, drive efficiencies and save time for frontline staff. I have just published a post about this challenge and Triscribe's solution. I would love to hear any comments or feedback on the topic... How could we use this information better? What are hospitals already doing? Where are the gaps? Thanks- Posted

Every two years, The Neurological Alliance runs My Neuro Survey to give a picture of the experience of care, treatment and support for people with neurological conditions. From a lack of mental wellbeing support, delays to life changing treatment and care and a lack of information and support at diagnosis, over 8,500 people living with or affected by neurological conditions across the UK shared their experiences in the 2021/22 My Neuro Survey.
