I am going to write a series of blogs about my situation: what I'm seeing, my thoughts and my fears on the coronavirus, personally and professionally. I am a critical care outreach nurse one day a week and for the rest of the time I work non-clinically for the charity Patient Safety Learning. My personal situation will not be unlike many. I have worries just like you – money, job, health, kids, elderly relatives (my parents will kill me for saying that!), food… It is important to capture our stories, no matter who you are or what you do. The impact of the coronavirus is widespread. It is affecting our daily lives and our future.- Posted

The NIHR themed review Improving Care by Using Patient Feedback highlights that this is a topic beset by complexity, uncertainty and disagreement. It’s also an area which can provoke strong emotions both from those offering feedback, such as: “why isn’t anyone listening?” and those receiving it: “why am I being attacked when I work so hard?”.

Content ArticleThe objective of this piece of work was to try and create a different way of navigating through the various themes in mental health. There are a huge range of posts on mental health and related areas on the hub. Seemingly endless information, and so little time to absorb it. I know from experience, and from the learning I have undertaken and delivered on information mastery, that there is so much material available it is difficult to find the time to discover, and then read fully, what is most relevant to the work in hand. As a result I have created a diagram (below - click on it to enlarge it) and an interactive pdf (attached), which has a number of topics and subtopics links to existing hub content to help people to do exactly that. In doing this, the focus has been on including patients/users of services, avoiding medical jargon, taking a holistic view. I am really interested in everyone’s views on this. Is this a useful approach and a helpful model? Will it help you post and find what matters to you? I would love to gather people's ideas and potentially improve the model further.

News ArticleTwo in three UK doctors are suffering “moral distress” caused by the enfeebled state of the NHS and the damage the cost of living crisis is inflicting on patients’ health, research has found. Large numbers are ending up psychologically damaged by feeling they cannot give patients the best possible care because of problems they cannot overcome, such as long waits for treatment or lack of drugs or the fact that poverty or bad housing is making them ill. A new survey found that 65% of doctors overall, including nearly four in five (78%) GPs and more than half (56%) of hospital doctors, have experienced “moral distress” as a direct result of situations they have encountered working in the NHS. Seeing patients with malnutrition or hypothermia, or stuck on trolleys in A&E corridors asking for help or forced to choose between heating their home or getting a prescription dispensed are among the events triggering their distress, medics said. “There’s barely a doctor at work in the NHS today who doesn’t see or experience this distress on a daily basis,” said Prof Philip Banfield, the leader of the British Medical Association. The NHS is “impossibly overstretched”, has thousands of vacancies for doctors and has a quarter fewer doctors a head of population than Germany, he added. “In practice that means we can almost never give the standard of care we would want, only ever the care we can manage.
