    This is the report of the Scottish Government's Ministerial Task Force on Health Inequalities. The report brings together thinking on poverty, lack of employment, children's lives and support for families and physical and social environments, as well as on health and wellbeing. It makes clear that the Scottish Government will not only respond to the consequences of health inequalities, but also tackle its causes.

    Joshua Sahota died as a result of asphyxia and psychosis while a patient in Northgate Ward at Wedgewood House, operated and staffed by Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust. In his report, the Coroner raised patient safety concerns regarding how the trust communicates to relatives which items are restricted and not allowed to be brought into the ward. He raised concerns that family and friends of current inpatients may still inadvertently take a restricted item onto the ward unless changes are put in place.

    The authors of this research study, published in BMJ Quality & Safety looked at the issues of hazardous prescribing and inadequate monitoring in patients with mental health issues being managed in primary care. They identified a lack of data in this area, despite most patients with mental illness receiving treatment in a primary care setting. The study found that: 9.4% of patients ‘at risk’ triggered at least one indicator for potentially hazardous prescribing. The risk was greatest for patients aged 35–44, females and those receiving more than 10 repeat prescriptions. 90.2% of patients ‘at risk’ triggered at least one indicator for inadequate monitoring. The risk was particularly high in people under the age of 25, females and those with one or no repeat prescription. The authors of the study hope their findings will support providers to reduce risk and improve care for patients who receive mental health treatment in primary care.

    MINDFUL EMPLOYER provides employers with easier access to information and support in relation to supporting staff who experience stress, anxiety, depression and other mental health conditions. Run by Workways, a service of Devon Partnership NHS Trust, MINDFUL EMPLOYER was developed with employers in Exeter and launched in October 2004. Convergent evidence from the current and previous pandemics indicates that nurses experience the highest levels of psychological distress compared with other health professionals. Chris and his wife Jade suffered a miscarriage in February 2021, and on the back of this, Chris realised that there was very little support or anywhere to turn to for men, who were going through the agony of miscarriage.     This study, published in Occupational Medicine, aimed to identify the rates of probable mental health disorder in staff working in intensive care units in nine English hospitals during June and July 2020. Results showed: Almost half of intensive care unit staff who participated in this study report symptoms consistent with a probable diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder, severe depression or anxiety or problem drinking. Around one in seven intensive care unit staff in this study report recent thoughts of self-harm or of wanting to be better off dead. Nursing staff in this study were more likely to report higher levels of distress than doctors or other clinical staff.

    Despite the effectiveness of total knee arthroplasty (TKA; knee replacement surgery), patients often have lingering pain and dysfunction. Recent studies have raised concerns that preoperative mental health may negatively affect outcomes after TKA. The primary aim of this study from Melnic et al. investigates the relationship between patient-reported mental health and postoperative physical function following TKA. The study found that poor mental health should not be a contraindication for performing TKA. For patients with the lowest mental health scores, physicians should account for the possibility that physical function scores may deteriorate a year after surgery. Tighter follow-up guidelines, more frequent physical therapy visits, or treatment for mental health issues may be considered to counter such deterioration.
