It provides a framework of good practice for the delivery of mandatory NHS equality, diversity and inclusion training for all staff, This training should be an integral part of the organisation’s wider cultural change and organisational development activities. Planning and monitoring of training delivery should be done in partnership with trade unions and staff networks, this can also support wider staff engagement.

Content ArticleThe report of the Independent Inquiry into Inequalities in Health chaired by Sir Donald Acheson was published in 1998. The purpose of the inquiry was to inform the development of the government's public health strategy and to contribute to the forthcoming white paper, Our healthier nation. The report made a number of specific recommendations on a range of areas relating to health, environmental and social factors including: introducing health impact assessments for all policies that were likely to have a direct or indirect impact on health and health inequalities. appointing directors of public health in every health authority. placing a partnership duty on the NHS executive and regional government to ensure local partnerships between health and local government.

Content ArticleIn this blog for NHS Providers, National medical director's clinical fellow Cian Wade writes about his work with the NHS Improvement national patient safety team on reducing healthcare inequalities. Responding to commitments in the NHS Long Term Plan, this work focuses on two main areas: Determining the extent and causes of unequal experiences of clinical harm among different patient groups. This involved working with patient groups and system leaders to map patient journeys that demonstrate how and why some patients are at heightened risk of harm. Identifying areas for development that may help reduce health inequalities around patient safety. This second phase is in progress and involves gathering input on specific interventions that may reduce the risk of harm.

Content ArticleLong waiting times and growing waiting lists for hospital treatment have been a problem for some time, but the COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the issue and waiting lists have grown rapidly. This analysis of waiting list data by The King's Fund shows a clear relationship between longer waiting lists and deprivation, with those living in the most deprived areas nearly twice as likely to wait more than a year for treatment compared to those living in the least deprived areas.

Content ArticleIn most cases pregnancy and birth are a positive and safe experience for women and their families. This is the outcome that everyone working in maternity services wants every time, for every woman. But when things go wrong, we need to understand what happened, and whether the outcome could have been different. The death or injury of a new baby or mother is devastating and something that everyone working in the health and care system has a responsibility to do all they can to prevent. Following the publication of ‘Getting safer faster’ the Care Quality Commission (CQC) launched a programme of risk-based, focused maternity safety inspections involving a more focused in-depth assessment of relational elements such as teamworking and culture, staff and patient experience. Building on our previous calls for action, the CQC also sought to further explore the barriers that prevent some services from providing consistently good, safe care and to better understand the disparities in outcomes that exist for women and babies from Black and minority ethnic groups. This report presents the key themes from nine of those inspections alongside insight gathered from direct engagement with organisations representing women using maternity services and their families, including Five X More and local Maternity Voices Partnerships.

Content ArticleThis research, published by PLoS ONE, highlights how community-based antenatal care, with a focus on continuity of carer reduced health inequalities and improved maternal and neonatal clinical outcomes for women with social risk factors. The findings support the current policy drive to increase continuity of midwife-led care, whilst adding that community-based care may further improve outcomes for women at increased risk of health inequalities.

Content ArticleWhile COVID-19 has worsened patient waiting times across the NHS, patients with pelvic disorders have long been an under-served population experiencing unacceptable delays in care. Pelvic floor disorders are varied and can be complex, but treatment is available. However, patients, particularly those requiring surgery, can wait years from presentation before receiving the treatment they need.

CDC's Racism and Health website (8 April 2021)
Patient Safety Learning posted an article in Health inequalities
Rochelle P. Walensky, Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and administrator of the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), has declared racism a serious public health threat. Adding action to words, she highlighted several new efforts CDC is leading to accelerate its work to address racism as a fundamental driver of racial and ethnic health inequities in the United States. The CDC have unveiled a new website “Racism and Health” that will serve as a hub for the agency’s efforts and a catalyst for greater education and dialogue around these critical issues. -
Content ArticleIn this article, published in The Practising Midwife, Rachel Crowe argues that in the UK, pregnant women who are hearing impaired or D/deaf (sign language users) and deaf (who are hard of hearing but who have English as their first language and may lipread and/or use hearing aids) are often labelled as high risk and offered a care pathway that is unsuitable and detrimental to their care. Identifying the gaps in maternity that exist in current guidelines and practice can help midwives to ensure women get appropriate, high-quality woman-centred care. This article provides an overview to the needs of D/deaf birthing people with a number of recommendations and tools for use in clinical practice.

Content ArticleThis toolkit has been co-produced by the national Maternity Transformation Programme and a selection of service user representatives to help local maternity systems produce their own communications plans and activities. It provides helpful advice and suggestions about how to communicate with women of different backgrounds, about the extra care support that is available to them, as well as signposting to currently available publications, messaging, insights and templates. The aim is to raise awareness amongst pregnant women from Black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds that extra support and help is available to them during this uncertain coronavirus period.

Content ArticleThis report from the NHS Race and Health Observatory, acknowledges the growing evidence suggesting there may be drawbacks when using pulse oximetry on darker skin. Whilst the picture on racial bias in pulse oximetry is still mixed, as a worst-case scenario, the application of this intervention can potentially have negative outcomes for patients with more pigmentation in their skin. To help counter potential health inequalities in this area, the report outlines a number of recommendations for healthcare, regulatory and research bodies.

Content ArticleWomen with little-to-no English continue to have poor birth outcomes and low service user satisfaction. When language support services are used it enhances the relationship between the midwife and the woman, improves outcomes and ensures safer practice. However, this study has shown a reluctance to use professional interpreter services by midwives. This study from Bridle et al. aims to understand the experiences of midwives using language support services.

Content ArticleThe Workforce Race Equality Standard (WRES) programme has now been collecting data on race inequality for five years, holding up a mirror to the service and revealing the disparities that exist for black and minority ethnic staff compared to their white colleagues. The findings of this report do not make for a comfortable read, and nor should they. The evidence from each WRES report over the years has shown that our black and minority ethnic staff members are less well represented at senior levels, have measurably worse day to day experiences of life in NHS organisations, and have more obstacles to progressing in their careers. The persistence of outcomes like these is not something that any of us should accept. It is in recognition of these realities that the People Plan 2020/21 has ‘belonging’ as one of its four pillars.
