    This report by The Patients Association is based on information gathered from more than 1,000 patients in a survey carried out in December 2021, just before the omicron wave of the Covid-19 pandemic hit the UK. The results of the survey highlight that patients found it hard to access care during this period, with pressures affecting the NHS compromising their care. They also show that the worst affected patients were those whose illness or care needs seriously affect their day-to-day lives.

    This guideline developed by the World Health Organization (WHO) is intended for healthcare professionals involved in the care of patients with suspected or confirmed Covid-19. It is not meant to replace clinical judgment or specialist consultation, but rather to strengthen frontline clinical management and the public health response. This guideline is a product of the contributions of several WHO team members and independent experts from all over the world.

    From early on in the COVID-19 pandemic, the Maternal Mental Health Alliance (MMHA) and Centre for Mental Health were concerned about the increased mental health challenges that women during and after pregnancy were likely facing as a result of the pandemic and government-imposed restrictions introduced to tackle it. Thanks to Comic Relief ‘Covid Recovery’ funding, the MMHA commissioned the Centre to explore just how much of a challenge the pandemic has placed on perinatal mental health and the services that support women, their partners, and families during this time. This report draws together all of the available data collected during the pandemic for the first time.

    The All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Coronavirus was set up in July 2020 to conduct a rapid inquiry into the UK Government’s handling of the Covid-19 pandemic. This report outlines the APPG's findings on the incidence, impact and treatment of Long Covid. It includes recommendations for the UK Government to tackle the issues related to Long Covid that individuals, employers and healthcare professionals face.

    The information that care homes submit to CQC about the deaths of people in their care is published on a weekly basis as part of the Office for National Statistics (ONS) reporting on deaths. The ONS data is not broken down by whether the person who died had a disability. Supported by ONS, the Care Quality Commission (CQC) has completed a targeted piece of analysis to better understand the impact of coronavirus (COVID-19) on people with a learning disability, some of whom may also be autistic, and how the number of deaths during this period compares to the number of deaths last year. This analysis looked at all deaths notified to CQC between 10 April and 15 May from providers registered with CQC who provide care to people with a learning disability and/or autism (including providers of adult social care, independent hospitals and in the community), and where the person who died was indicated to have a learning disability on the death notification form.

    After a decade of austerity, The NHS Long Term Plan was meant to be a turning point for healthcare. However, those plans have been severely disrupted by the coronavirus pandemic. New analysis from the Institute for Public Policy Research shows the scale of the damage done by the pandemic across several major health conditions. It recommends a package of six ambitious changes to ‘build back better’. These policies are designed to do three things. First, they intend to ensure the pandemic does not cause lasting damage to healthcare services for future generations. Second, they look to bring in areas – like social care and public health – that are not covered in The NHS Long Term Plan, but which COVID-19 has harshly reminded us are integral to healthcare. Third, they look to capture the innovations that occurred during the pandemic.

    Since the Covid-19 pandemic began, a disproportionate number of BAME patients have reported not having their Long-Covid symptoms taking seriously. In this blog, Sheeva Azma looks at the impact of racial profiling on patient safety in the US, highlighting how health inequalities have worsened during the pandemic. She interviews Chimére Smith, who developed Long Covid after catching the virus in March 2020 and was left unable to work. Smith talks about the importance of representation in medicine, sharing how black doctors listened to her and took her seriously, when every white doctor she had seen dismissed her symptoms.

    Hughes et al. studied video consulting in the NHS during 2020–2021 through video interviews, an online survey and online discussions with people who had provided and participated in such consultations. Video consulting had previously been used for selected groups in limited settings in the UK. The pandemic created a seismic shift in the context for remote consulting, in which video transformed from a niche technology typically introduced by individual clinicians committed to innovation and quality improvement to offering what many felt was the only safe way to deliver certain types of healthcare. A new practice emerged: a co-constitution of technology and healthcare made possible by new configurations of equipment, connectivity and physical spaces. Despite heterogeneous service settings and previous experiences of video consulting, we found certain kinds of common changes had made video consulting possible. The authors used practice theory to analyse these changes, interpreting the commonalities found in our data as changes in purpose, material arrangements and a relaxing of rules about security, confidentiality and location of consultations.

    There was a national roll out of ‘COVID Virtual Wards’ (CVW) during England's second COVID-19 wave (Autumn 2020 – Spring 2021). These services used remote pulse oximetry monitoring for COVID-19 patients following discharge from hospital. A key aim was to enable rapid detection of patient deterioration. It was anticipated that the services would support early discharge, reducing pressure on beds. This study from Georghiou et al. evaluated the impact of the CVW services on hospital activity. The study found no evidence of early discharges or changes in readmissions associated with the roll out of COVID Virtual Wards across England.

    The UK government is seeking views on proposed changes to the Human Medicine Regulations 2012 to help with the safe and efficient distribution of a COVID-19 vaccine and expanded flu vaccine programme in the UK, along with treatments for COVID-19 and any other diseases that become pandemic. Ministers say there will be no shortcut on safety or effectiveness, and that any vaccine will be approved for the UK only if it meets the highest standards. The deputy chief medical officer for England, Prof Jonathan Van-Tam, said: “If we develop effective vaccines, it’s important we make them available to patients as quickly as possible but only once strict safety standards have been met. The proposals consulted on today suggest ways to improve access and ensure as many people are protected from Covid-19 and flu as possible without sacrificing the absolute need to ensure that any vaccine used is both safe and effective.” What do you think?     Why do we need GP referrals to this service for assessment? Early patients untested cannot get access to GPs, not being believed, dismissed, told they are delusional. se have been sat for months unable to get referrals ...today someone got a referral and the NHS denied them that too. So we are getting no support. We are having a host of around 200 effects (Ive documented them), most of us are weeks 12 to 33 and having lung cognitive and heart problems. We needs mri and ct scans now and we cant be joining the back of already lengthy outpatient appointments. theresa huge backlog. Sir Simon Stevens from NHS England doesn't have time to answer our letter, he said the Seacole Centre has been set up...but it only takes tested positive patietns and the phone numbers don't work. He told us to watch himself on the Andrew Marr show..which was about this app. As you can see we still cant get referrals here either as we need GP referrals adn we cant get them/..did no one raise this? I think they did...as I did with Senior Government Advisors. Nothing has been offered to untested patients. The medical community are very much aware that we were sent home so to deny we are sick and label it as anxiety is a scandal. Likewise, graded therapy (I note exercise is on here) is not recommended as we have heart problems and some of us have done it and had heart attacks...dangerous information to share with people suffering 200 symptoms thatt the medical community have not followed us on .... health-problems (1).pdf

    Following the recent Patient Safety Learning webinar, ‘Patient safety: Time for questions? Non Covid-19 care and treatment’, we’ve gained a deeper understanding of the key issues frontline staff and patients are facing and have heard many more great ideas around how to address these issues and improve staff and patient safety. Due to its success, and the clear need to spend more time addressing the issues raised and identifying further issues, we plan to hold more webinars.
