Content ArticleThe State of Care is the Care Quality Commission (CQC) annual assessment of health care and social care in England. The report looks at the trends, shares examples of good and outstanding care, and highlights where care needs to improve. The care that people received in 2019/20 was mostly of good quality. But while the quality of care was largely maintained compared with the previous year, there was generally no improvement overall. And in the space of a few short months since then, the pandemic has placed the severest of challenges on the whole health and care system in England.

Content ArticleThis report sets out the progress and learning from the first phase of the COVID-19 pandemic in informing advice and recommendations to government and the social care sector. The Social Care Sector COVID-19 Support Taskforce was commissioned in June 2020, with this report seeing the completion of its work in August 2020. The taskforce was set up to oversee the delivery of two packages of support that the government had put in place for the care sector: the Social Care Action Plan and the Care Home Support Plan. In addition, the taskforce was asked to support the government's work on community outbreaks – areas of the country that needed particular help and intervention to deal with higher rates of infection – and advising and supporting local places to consider and respond to reducing the risk of infection in care homes and the wider social care sector. Its further remit was to provide advice on the requirements for the response to COVID-19 in the next few months, ahead of and into winter.

Constipation can be a life–threatening issue for people with a learning disability who are at heightened risk from complications if it is left untreated. This campaign has been developed by NHS England to support people with a learning disability, their carers and people who work in primary care to recognise the signs of constipation. Resources have been co–created with input from the Down’s Syndrome Association, Mencap and Pathways Associates to ensure that they are fit for purpose. The resources aim to: Drive awareness of the seriousness of constipation Help people recognise the signs of constipation at an early stage Empower people to take action and ensure that people with a learning disability experiencing constipation get the right health support straight away Raise awareness of the steps which can be taken to prevent constipation. -

Content ArticleThis report is aimed at people who are working with those who have a learning disability, in the role of commissioners or providers of services. It was produced on behalf of the Hampshire Safeguarding Adults Board by a multi-agency group and seeks to understand why people with a learning disability are at greater risk of choking, looking at what can be done locally in Hampshire to improve outcomes for people who are at risk of choking, in any care setting. The report makes a number of recommendations based on common sense and good practice.

Improving the safety of people with dysphagia is essential, and introducing individual patient management guidelines can reduce the risks associated with this potentially life-threatening condition. This document from the NHS National Patient Safety Agency outlines the issues facing adults with learning disabilities who have dysphagia and introduces support materials that can provide practical help for these people. The tools can be adapted for local use and for any adult who has dysphagia.
