    The non-profit Patient Information Forum (PIF) has published a new one-page guide to Body Mass Index (BMI). The poster was developed following user engagement sessions with patients and healthcare professionals which highlighted the amount of misinformation surrounding BMI. It is free to download and share and can be used directly by patients or a resource for healthcare professionals. Welcoming the publication of 'BMI – What you need to know', Dr Juhi Tandon said: “As a GP for more than a decade, I still struggle to have the BMI conversation with patients. Discussing someone’s BMI can easily make them feel uncomfortable as they feel like they are being judged. It will be very helpful to share a clear fact sheet to help patients understand more about BMI in a non-judgemental way.”

In this article, Charlotte Wickens, Policy Adviser at The King's Fund, looks at five 'myths' perpetuated about the NHS by politicians and the media. She analyses the extent to which each myth can be backed up or debunked by the available data and evidence.     General practice has always been the foundation and gateway to the NHS, but this part of the healthcare system is now under strain due to greater demand from an increasingly complex patient profile, and a stretched workforce. Lack of staff and coherent planning means that the current model is not fit for purpose, and this has resulted in a recent decrease in patient satisfaction. This proposal by the think tank Policy Exchange outlines the reforms that could help the NHS develop a model of general practice to better meet the needs and interests of patients and healthcare workers.

    In April 2022, an investigation commenced into the communications provided to patients and/or their carers following placement on a waiting list in Northern Ireland. The primary focus of the investigation is the adequacy of Trust communications to patients, and/or their carers, across various stages of the waiting list process, with significant consideration being given to the content of the Integrated Elected Access Protocol (Department of Health guidance), and its application by the Trusts. The objective was to determine whether or not systemic maladministration has arisen within the communication practices of the Northern Ireland Health and Social Care Trusts (the Trusts) and whether improvements are required. It also aims to publicise what patients and/or their carers should expect from waiting list communications. The Investigative Methodology drew evidence from a wide range of sources. This included extensive queries and information requests to the Trusts and the Department; a General Public survey (with 646 responses); a General Practitioner (GP) survey (with 321 responses); follow up interviews with a number of General Public and GP survey respondents; and a number of Case Study reviews.
