    In May 2012, a working group from The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh issued a report examining the provision of care for victims of major trauma in Scotland. This report recommended the development of a trauma system across Scotland which focuses on reducing disability as well as mortality.

    Thousands of people have joint replacement surgery every year and the National Joint Registry gathers together data on the outcomes of these surgeries. This allows surgeons and hospitals to monitor the success of their operations and ensure that the devices used are safe and effective. Individuals can also use the Registry to inform themselves better about the surgery which they are having. This short video explains what data is used and, more importantly, how it is used to ensure best outcomes for patients.

    This is a story of a patient in whom the emergency department missed the same diagnosis twice, four years apart. The first occasion (prior to his diagnosis of ankylosing spondylitis) was understandable. The second was not. As a result of this case, the hospital have changed their x-ray policy for non-traumatic back pain. They also want to share key learning points (the majority of which were due to lack of awareness about a relatively rare condition and its complications) as widely as possible, to help others avoid the same errors.  This reflective learning features guest educator, Mr Gareth Dwyer (the patient).

    Getting It Right First Time (GIRFT) is designed to improve the quality of care within the NHS by reducing unwarranted variations. By tackling variations in the way services are delivered across the NHS, and by sharing best practice between trusts, GIRFT identifies changes that will help improve care and patient outcomes, as well as delivering efficiencies such as the reduction of unnecessary procedures and cost savings.
