The Personalised Care Group at NHS England aims to help improve the choice and control that patients have over their health, as part of its NHS Long Term Plan commitments. These decision support tools will help people discuss their treatment choices with their healthcare professionals through shared decision making. The eight new tools cover the following conditions: Dupuytren’s contracture Carpal tunnel syndrome Hip osteoarthritis Knee osteoarthritis Further treatment for atrial fibrillation Cataracts Glaucoma Wet age-related macular degeneration

The Accessible Information Standard is a set of principles for the presenting, sharing and discussing information with patients. It aims to make sure that people who have a disability, impairment or sensory loss get information that they can access and understand, and any communication support that they need from health and care services.

This cross-sectional survey in the BMJ Open aimed to examine the sociodemographic characteristics, activities, motivations, experiences, skills and challenges of patient partners working across multiple health system settings in Canada. This survey was the first of its kind to examine the characteristics, experiences and dynamics of a large sample of self-identified patient partners at a population level. Although patient partners who took part were from similar sociodemographic background, the scope, intensity and longevity of their roles varied. Respondents predominantly identified as female (76.6%), white (84%) and university educated (70.2%). Primary motivations for becoming a patient partner were the desire to improve the health system based on either a negative (36.2%) or positive (23.3%) experience. Respondents reported feeling enthusiastic (83.6%), valued (76.9%) and needed (63.3%) always or most of the time. Just under half felt they had always or often been adequately compensated in their role.

In 2021, a multi-professional staff support group was established under the Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust’s Freedom to Speak Up process which raised new questions and concerns around the probity and clinical standards of a Consultant Spinal Surgeon (“Consultant Spinal Surgeon A”) whilst they were employed at Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust (now part of the Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust) (“the Trust”). As a result, the Trust commissioned the Spinal Patient Safety Look Back Review (“SPSLBR”) and Investigation Group to evaluate these concerns, including obtaining independent expert advice.In January 2022, the Trust commenced the SPSLBR to investigate and manage patient safety concerns raised in respect of Consultant Spinal Surgeon A who was employed at Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust (now part of the Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust) between 1991 and January 2015. This report outlines the investigation carried out by the SPSLBR Investigation Group on behalf of the Trust to investigate and manage potential Serious Incidents (“SI”) caused by the errors and omissions attributable to clinics, surgery and/or consultations undertaken by Consultant Spinal Surgeon A within the scope identified in the Terms of Reference.
