Muckamore inquiry: Staff accused of ignoring TB symptoms
Patient Safety Learning posted a news article in News
The mother of a patient at Muckamore Abbey Hospital has described how her son contracted tuberculosis (TB) while at the hospital. She said he had been left severely disabled after a series of associated strokes. Patient P116 is now 40 years old and has suffered from severe epilepsy since he was a baby. His mother told the inquiry into abuse at the hospital that her concerns over her son's health were ignored. She said that even after he began developing symptoms - including losing six stone (38kg) of weight - staff seemed "not to care". In the end, he was only diagnosed with TB after his mother took him to hospital herself. Due to the delay in the diagnosis and the way the family's complaint was handled, a serious adverse incident review was carried out and P116's mother received a letter of apology from the then permanent secretary at the Department of Health, Richard Pengelly, and Theresa Villiers, who was Northern Ireland secretary at the time. His mother told the inquiry her son's time in Muckamore remained a "major trauma" for the family and she still found it very difficult to talk about. She told the inquiry she felt strongly that "independent expert support" should be given to patients abused or neglected in Muckamore, including specialist counselling for the patients and their families. Persistent cough may be tuberculosis not Covid, doctor warns
Patient Safety Learning posted a news article in News
The UK's top public health doctor says anyone with a persistent cough and fever should not dismiss it as Covid - and should consider other infectious illnesses like tuberculosis (TB). Dr Jenny Harries' warning comes as provisional data shows there were 4,430 cases recorded in England in 2021, despite sharp declines in recent years. Charities are calling for more funding to tackle the disease around the world. They say the pandemic and conflicts have set back progress worldwide. In 2020, global deaths because of tuberculosis ranked second to Covid for any infectious disease. The charity Stop TB Partnership warns the war in Ukraine could have "devastating impacts on health services", including the country's strong national TB treatment programme. The charity is urging all countries to put facilities in place urgently so refugees can be given the care they need. In the UK a requirement for Ukrainians to take a TB test before arrival has been waived for those who are coming to the country on the family scheme visa. Refugees arriving on the scheme will get medical care and testing via GPs. Meanwhile Dr Jenny Harries, chief executive of the UK Health Security Agency, said delayed diagnosis and treatment, particularly during the pandemic, will have increased the number of undetected cases in England. Tuberculosis warning as cases of disease rise for first time in decades in Europe
Patient-Safety-Learning posted a news article in News
Disruption caused by the coronavirus pandemic is being blamed for the first recorded rise in tuberculosis (TB) cases and deaths in Europe for two decades. Some 27,300 people died from TB in the World Health Organization’s Europe region in 2021, up from 27,000 deaths the previous year, according to a new surveillance report by WHO and European Union’s disease prevention agency. The rate of new cases and relapses in the region is also estimated to have increased by 1.2 per cent compared to 2020, in a reversal analysts said “reflects the impact of disruption to TB services caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.” The report comes days after the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) reported a 7.3 per cent rise in cases in England in 2021, a year that saw new 4,425 cases. Dr Esther Robinson, head of the UKHSA's TB unit, said, "Tuberculosis remains a risk to some of the most vulnerable people in our society and this data highlights that progress towards elimination has stalled." News ArticleA new fixed-dose combination (FDC) of “3HP”, a short-course tuberculosis (TB) preventive treatment (TPT) combining two drugs, rifapentine and isoniazid, is starting to be rolled out in five TB high burden countries in Africa. This will reduce the number of pills that people who need the treatment have to take every week from nine to three. Enough treatments for up to 3 million patients are expected to be made available for eligible countries this year. Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Mozambique, and Zimbabwe will be the first countries out of a total of 12 to provide the new regimen at a US$15 price thanks to funding from Unitaid, PEPFAR and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.
