I am surprised that one of the biggest non communicable diseases is not used as an example on the poster for world patient safety day. Mental Health illnesses (as a primary source of NCD, not as a secondary outcome) and neurodivergence (unless you are classifying this under Neurology but it is rare for the 2 to be recognised under the same specialism) surely should be included in the examples given. In terms of mortality rates, health inequalities, comorbidities and cost effectiveness, mental health is one of the biggest challenges of our time from a public health and patient safety perspective. I’m not sure disease is the right terminology for either, however is diabetes a disease? These are 2 big areas that need to be focussed on for patient safety and prioritised for safe care! I would be happy to share further

So let’s put this into context:- Are you saying that out of a sample size of 216:- 30 patients were affected and out of those 30, 12 patients were considered to have been caused serious harm and 3 died?? If this is the case, that means (if my maths is correct):- 1) 14% of patient sample size affected 2) 6% of patients considered to have been caused serious harm 3) 1% of patients died ILD stats show generally a high mortality rate so depending on sample Size compared to actual patient data, this article does not provide conclusive factual information or evidence and therefore can be considered propaganda. With over 200 differing types of ILD, this is really difficult to give an accurate picture! Therefore a dedicated clinician is being described as rogue without any evidence to prove this, especially when the research provides the following results:- Within the EXCITING-ILD registry 28.5% of the patients died (n = 171), mainly due to ILD (n = 71, 41.5%) according to research in 2024 (PUBMED) Facts before deformation please!!

It’s also really important to recognise that in order to support patient safety for new borns and children, we need to think about the parents and their journey through the health system. what about mothers and postnatal illnesses such as postnatal depression? Psychosis? PTSD from birth trauma. All of these things impact on a new born and their development. It is also how the parent experiences health services and patient care that can also have an impact on children!
