Thanks for starting this topic Mark, and for your responses Helen and Mark (UHS).  The query arose from me because at our Trust we are still sorting out our roles and also need to be sure we have the appropriate reporting structure to be effective - as in form following function (purpose).  And I think Helen, it needs to be appropriate reporting in both senses - accountability for our work and feeding back information and intel - which as you say might be to the same or different people. The latter might vary for different aspects of our work whereas 'line management' is likely to be fixed.

    My main interest is in the nature and seniority of the people PSPs report to for their accountability. I doubt there is a right answer, especially as organisations vary so much in how they are structured.  But it would seem to me that the PSP role is one of safety governance so to be sufficiently challenging and change-inducing, we need to report into a fairly strategic and senior level.
