Getting It Right First Time (GIRFT) is designed to improve the quality of care within the NHS by reducing unwarranted variations. By tackling variations in the way services are delivered across the NHS, and by sharing best practice between trusts, GIRFT identifies changes that will help improve care and patient outcomes, as well as delivering efficiencies such as the reduction of unnecessary procedures and cost savings.
Neurology deals with disorders of the nervous system, which includes the brain, the nerves and muscles. Around 1 in 6 people in the UK have a neurological condition such as encephalitis, Parkinson's disease or migraine. The GIRFT neurology report is based on visits to 139 neurology units across England. Key recommendations include:
- Ensure all patients with acute neurological disorders can promptly access neurology services
- Develop care pathways for chronic neurological disorders
- Improve the outpatient referral process
