Summary

The emergence in December 2019 of COVID-19, caused by a novel coronavirus, and its subsequent spread around the world, led the World Health Organisation to declare a pandemic on March 11, 2020: the first to be caused by a coronavirus . The virus appears to have originated in bats, with spread to humans likely mediated by an intermediate mammalian.
