At least 20% of baby deaths ‘potentially avoidable’

At least a fifth of baby deaths last year may have been preventable, with this estimate considered “a minimum”, an analysis of thousands of care reviews has concluded.

The findings were set out in the latest annual report into 2025 Perinatal Mortality Review Tool investigations, published today by MBRRACE-UK.

The report comes amid intense scrutiny of maternity services following the publication of the national maternity and neonatal investigation and Donna Ockenden’s Nottingham review this summer.
