Strategies to mitigate institutional maternal mortality: Lessons from a quality improvement initiative in Brazilian maternity hospitals (25 December 2025))

Summary

A recent study in Global Health: Science and Practice — co-authored by IHI experts — showcased a 34% reduction in maternal mortality across 19 Brazilian hospitals.  By implementing the “4Rs” clinical sequence (Recognise, Rescue, Reassess, and Refer), and leveraging the Modified Early Obstetric Warning Score (MEOWS), this scalable model offers a blueprint that may be used to help improve maternal health in diverse care settings worldwide.
