How is technology changing clinician-patient relationships? (BMJ, 8 March 2024)

Summary

The role of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare is expanding quickly with clinical, administrative, and patient facing uses emerging in many specialties.

Research on the effectiveness of AI in healthcare is generally weak, but evidence of AI improving doctor’s diagnostic decisions is emerging for some focused clinical applications, including interpreting lung pathology and retinal images. However, we must work with patients to understand how AI impacts on their care, says Rebecca Rosen in this BMJ opinion piece.
