Deprivation of Liberty: Looking towards the Liberty Protection Safeguards

This conference will focus on improving practice within the current Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards, and looking ahead to the Liberty Protection Safeguards. The Liberty Protection Safeguards were consulted on in 2022 but were not implemented, the Government has now committed to a new consultation in 2026 with a view to improving the current system. This conference will prepare you for the changes ahead and take a practical approach to ensure you are delivering effectively in the interim using a system that has been widely criticised.

The conference will also consider the impact of the Mental Health Bill which is currently progressing through parliament  for people detained under the Mental Health Act and the effects of this on the Deprivation of Liberty system and the implications of the changes both in community and acute settings.  There will be an extended focus on unlawful DoLS and learning from claims, and on the forthcoming changes to under 18s with particular relevance to 16-18 year olds.
