    06 December 2024

This virtual masterclass is designed to equip healthcare professionals with the essential skills and knowledge to effectively perform and manage risk assessments in the healthcare setting.
It is vital for healthcare organisations to ensure staff have the necessary resources and skills to undertake risk assessments to safeguard patients, staff, equipment and premises from harm, as well as remaining compliant with legislation and national guidance (eg. Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, Health and Social Care Act 2008 (Regulated Activities) Regulations 2014: Regulation 12).
We will delve into the fundamental aspects of risk management, starting with understanding what constitutes a risk and exploring various sources of risk identification. We’ll introduce the ‘Bow-Tie’ method to visualise risk pathways by linking causes, consequences and risk events.
We will also learn how to evaluate risk scores based on their potential consequence and likelihood and we will learn about the importance of implementing and assessing the effectiveness of controls.
The course will cover risk response strategies using the 4T’s approach and we will be developing SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) action plans. This comprehensive programme will equip you with the tools needed to enhance patient safety and organisational resilience through effective risk management.

This is a 6 hour CPD approved course, written, continuously developed and delivered by Rob Galloway. It evolved after he was involved in a patient’s death 16 years ago. This led to his “Damascus moment”, as he had a realisation that the traditional ways of looking at improving patients safety were not working and a new mindset was needed.
The course is based on his 23 years of clinical experience and extensive work looking into the best ways to provide safer care and how best to implement the needed changes. The course has now been taken by over 3,000 people and is different in many ways to other human factors courses, in that it looks at things from a clinician’s perspective. As opposed to those in the airline industry who can decide to just not fly a plane if conditions are not ideal, his course is based on how to provide safer care in difficult circumstances where care must be provided whatever the situation is.
    Course objectives:
The course is aimed to give attendees a basic understanding of human factors and the importance of changing the culture to bring about improvements in care. As well as the traditional aspects of human factors such as teamworking and communication skills, the course looks at how we can improve our decision making skills by reducing cognitive bias.
The day is based on interactive case discussions. These are cases that he brings to the course as well attendees’ own examples – hence why no two courses are identical.
Human factors courses run the risk of being dry and theoretical. These interactive clinical cases and Rob’s extensive teaching experience and previous experience in stand-up comedy, makes this course different to others.
    Key learning objectives
Understand why medical errors happen. Realise the importance of human factors in a wider context – importance of culture, civility and values and behaviours. Understanding how we can maintain situational awareness. Understanding how we make decisions and how to reduce diagnostic error. Effective techniques to improve team working and optimise leadership & followership. How to communicate effectively. How best to use cognitive aids such as checklists & prompt cards. How to change a culture and implement change. Who should attend
The course is designed for doctors, nurses and clinicians of all types in primary and secondary care as well as the care sector. The course fulfils many doctors need to complete human factors training as part of their formal GMC training or as part of a needed course for GMC revalidation and appraisal.
The course is also designed for managerial and non-clinical staff to improve how they work, plus understand how best to support clinicians in Improving patient care.
