Content ArticleFrom the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic in the UK, Patient Safety Learning has been working with others in healthcare – from patients and staff to healthcare leaders and politicians – to identify the impact the pandemic is having on non COVID-19 treatment and care, and on patient safety. Recently, Patient Safety Learning hosted a webinar, in partnership with HealthPlusCare, titled ‘Patient safety: Time for questions? Non Covid-19 care and treatment’. The webinar took place on Wednesday 6 May, with a panel consisting of: Professor Maureen Baker CBE, Chair of the Professional Records Standards Body and past Chair of the Royal College of GPs Professor Mike Bewick, Chair of CECOPS and past Deputy Medical Director to Sir Bruce Keogh at NHS England Dr Jane Carthey, Human Factors and Patient Safety Specialist Mike Fairbourn, Chair of ABHI Patient Safety Working Group and BD Country General Manager Dean Russell MP, MP for Watford and member of the Health and Social Care Select Committee Claire Cox, Patient Safety Learning’s Associate Director of Patient Safety and Critical Care Outreach Nurse Helen Hughes, Patient Safety Learning’s Chief Executive We are delighted with the success of the webinar, with 542 participants. Those who attended represented stakeholders from across the health and care system, and were well-engaged, making good use of the chat, Q&A and polls.

Content ArticleIn this BMJ paper, Neil Greenberg and psychiatry colleagues set out measures that healthcare managers need to put in place to protect the mental health of healthcare staff having to make morally challenging decisions. The COVID-19 pandemic is likely to put healthcare professionals across the world in an unprecedented situation, having to make impossible decisions and work under extreme pressures. These decisions may include how to allocate scant resources to equally needy patients, how to balance their own physical and mental healthcare needs with those of patients, how to align their desire and duty to patients with those to family and friends, and how to provide care for all severely unwell patients with constrained or inadequate resources. This may cause some to experience moral injury or mental health problems.

The COVID-19 Mental Health Improvement Network has been set up by the Royal College of Psychiatrists (RCPsych) on behalf of NHS England & Improvement. Its aim is to support mental health teams to share and learn from each other to maintain and improve safety in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. This flyer has more information on the network and they are sharing changes that mental health providers have put in place to respond to COVID-19 challenges /safety issues on social media using #MHSIPCV19. -

Philip Anderson’s able-bodied daughter, Lucy, joins Philip in sharing their perspectives of positive developments during the coronavirus lockdown, and their hopes for the future. Philip acquired a debilitating rare disease and has had to learn to live with remorseless erosion of his physical capacity, and increasing dependency. "I confess that when I was able-bodied, I was not aware of the extent of restrictions imposed by organisations on those with physical impairments. I’m only as disabled by the choices others make, rather than by loss of my motivation to live life ‘normally'. I hope that many who are experiencing some of our restrictions for the first time, will be passionate advocates for those with disability," says Philip in this thought-provoking article published in Independent Living. -

'Cancer patients like me are just getting forgotten about'

COVID-19 has led to hospitals suspending cancer treatment and deterred some from seeking care. Alan Mayberry, 67, was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer in January and was due to have four treatments and then surgery to remove the cancer. Unfortunately due to the coronavirus pandemic Alan's operation in early May has been cancelled because beds in the intensive care unit are in short supply. Content ArticleThis report by The Patients Association is based on information gathered from more than 1,000 patients in a survey carried out in December 2021, just before the omicron wave of the Covid-19 pandemic hit the UK. The results of the survey highlight that patients found it hard to access care during this period, with pressures affecting the NHS compromising their care. They also show that the worst affected patients were those whose illness or care needs seriously affect their day-to-day lives.
