Content ArticleBack in January 2019, we started a regular team newsletter. Initially this was aimed at only the critical care unit (CCU) team; however, very quickly it developed into an all trust audience. In this post I discuss the multiple benefits the newsletter has offered as well as the challenges I came across. I want to share my experience on developing the newsletter to encourage other teams to consider writing a regular newsletter if they don’t already have one. This followed on from several outreach teams contacting me personally for assistance in writing their own newsletters.

Just and Learning Culture: A New Way of Caring
Mike Bird posted an article in Safety culture programmes
In 2016, Merseycare NHS Foundation Trust embarked on a journey towards a just and learning culture. Since then, they have made great progress and achieved significant results. They have produced an excellent interactive online presentation for anyone who wishes to improve the culture of the healthcare organisation in which they work. It describes why they started on the journey, what they did and the kinds of results they have obtained. It is an overview of a substantial programme, and demonstrates that while changing from a retributive 'blame' culture to a restorative 'just' culture may be challenging, it can be done - to the benefit of patients and staff.- Posted

Institute for Healthcare Improvement: Joy in work
Claire Cox posted an article in Staff safety
The Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) has published a White paper: Framework on Improving Joy in Work and a series of related videos. Clinician burnout has been well-documented and is at record highs. The same issues that drive burnout also diminish joy in work for the healthcare workforce. Healthcare leaders need to understand what factors are diminishing joy in work, nurture their workforce, and address the issues that drive burnout and sap joy in work. The most joyful, productive, engaged staff feel both physically and psychologically safe, appreciate the meaning and purpose of their work, have some choice and control over their time, experience camaraderie with others at work, and perceive their work life to be fair and equitable.- Posted

The toxic handler: organisational hero – and casualty
Claire Cox posted an article in Culture
In this article published in Harvard Business Review, Frost and Robinson discuss toxic handlers – managers who voluntarily shoulder the sadness, frustration, bitterness and anger of others so that high-quality work continues to get done. Managing the pain of others is hard work. Toxic handlers save organisations from self-destructing, but they often pay a high price – emotionally, professionally and sometimes physically. Some toxic handlers experience burnout; others suffer far worse consequences, such as ulcers and heart attacks. This article discusses burn out within healthcare and other industries, how it can happen and offers solutions. Free full text on sign up and registration.- Posted

"I know this is burnout. I didn’t want it to be. But it is."
Claire Cox posted an article in Blogs
I have been honest in my blogs during the pandemic. I have been apprehensive, scared and, at times, excited to work in the pandemic. So why do I feel so low at this moment? I am experiencing feelings that I have not had before. I have thoughts of leaving nursing. Surely, I can’t be the only one? Why now? Why am I feeling like this? This blog is to explore why this might be.- Posted

Content ArticleThe COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in an overall surge in new cases of depression and anxiety and an exacerbation of existing mental health issues, with a particular emotional and physical toll on health care workers. Limited resources, longer shifts, disruptions to sleep and to work-life balance and occupational hazards associated with exposure to COVID-19 have contributed to physical and mental fatigue, stress and anxiety and burnout. In this article, published by Wolters Kluwer, the Houston Methodist Hospital share the lessons learned collectively by an interdisciplinary team of Intensive Care Unit (ICU) leadership and collaborating scientists about the experience of occupational fatigue and burnout of intensive care personnel as a result of responding to the COVID-19 pandemic. They propose specific policy recommendations and guidelines for organisational readiness, resilience and disaster mitigation.

Content ArticleSeveral factors can compromise patient safety, such as ineffective teamwork, failed organisational processes and the physical and psychological overload of health professionals. Studies about associations between burnout and patient safety have shown different outcomes. In this paper, published by Medicina (Kaunas), a team in Brazil analysed twenty-one studies, most of them demonstrating an association between the existence of burnout and the worsening of patient safety. High levels of burnout is more common among physicians and nurses and it is associated with external factors such as: high workload, long journeys and ineffective interpersonal relationships.
