Content ArticleDiagnostics function as a compass in healthcare. They help determine the cause of a person’s condition, thus steering the healthcare provider towards the appropriate treatment or care pathway to address a disease and determine whether the approach is working. Despite their value in the healthcare delivery system, innovation, implementation, reimbursement and accessibility include barriers that constrain the use of diagnostics, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), where increased availability could lower healthcare costs while saving lives. How can leaders increase affordable access to essential diagnostics globally? How can diagnostic advances be supported without contributing to growing disparities across the globe? This report seeks to address these questions through a landscape review of the global diagnostic ecosystem – including identifying key stakeholders, barriers and enablers along the product life cycle and the effectiveness of diagnostics – while highlighting the various challenges, opportunities and potential solutions across high-income countries and LMICs.

The 12 days of digital patient safety

A couple of weeks ago, I presented some of the ideas I’ve had around digital clinical safety. This was seasonally branded, ‘The 12 days of Digital Patient Safety’. The 12 issues that were on my list comprised: AI – regulation, ethics and testing. Patient safety not built into the innovation process (co-design and co-production with patients is required). Patient safety (in use) not effectively built into the digital health compliance systems. Poor user experience (design). The safety of medical devices, e.g. remote hacking. Privacy and consent around data. Fragmentation of patient records and data. Lack of interoperability. Cybersecurity. Patient digital and health literacy. Clinician attitudes and knowledge of digital technologies. The barriers to EHR integration (and poor use of patient-generated data). There was only time on the webinar to cover points 2, 3, 6 and 10; I hope that we can have further session in 2022 where we can discuss the others. -

Content ArticleLast November, the UK, under its G7 Presidency, convened an event on patient safety entitled Patient Safety: from Vision to Reality, co-sponsored with the World Health Organization (WHO). The event was designed to build upon recent prominent initiatives taken forward by the UK Government and partner Member States to demonstrate the importance of taking action and facilitating collaboration to advance patient safety as an urgent global priority. This includes: annual Global Ministerial Summits on Patient Safety (from 2016) a Resolution on Global Action on Patient Safety (adopted by the World Health Assembly in 2019); and, the Global Patient Safety Collaborative developed in 2018 by the UK Government in partnership with the WHO to support patient safety improvement in low- and middle-income countries. Coupled with WHO’s Global Patient Safety Action Plan 2021-2030 and an annual World Patient Safety Day on 17th September, such initiatives will ensure that momentum can be maintained in order to tackle the truly global issue of patient safety within the wider context of strengthening national health systems. Better use of data for medication safety in hospitals

NHS hospital staff spend countless hours capturing data in electronic prescribing and medicines administration systems. Yet that data remains difficult to access and use to support patient care. This is a tremendous opportunity to improve patient safety, drive efficiencies and save time for frontline staff. I have just published a post about this challenge and Triscribe's solution. Content ArticleDespite the prevalence of diabetes amongst individuals with Serious Mental Illness (SMI), diabetes care is not currently audited within mental health inpatient settings as it audited in physical health settings. This project piloted an audit to assess the diabetes care within London NHS Mental Health Trusts. The Health Innovation Network in partnership with South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM) developed and piloted a diabetes audit. Following the SLaM pilot, the audit was completed by all nine London Mental Health Trusts. A diverse approach was taken to spread and adoption. This included piloting the audit within one MH Trust, refining, and then rolling out the audit to eight London Mental Health Trusts.
