Summary
In this article in the Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation Newsletter, Katsuyuki Miyasaka talks about the history of the pulse oximeter in Japan and celebrates one of it's earliest developers, Takuo Aoyagi.
The author recognises the life-saving impact of pulse oximeters, but talks about the need for more education and regulation around the use of this readily available device. Miyasaka highlights that the quality of devices is variable and that when patients attempt to interpret the numbers they see, it may lead to harm.
