Summary
Getting It Right First Time (GIRFT) is designed to improve the quality of care within the NHS by reducing unwarranted variations. By tackling variations in the way services are delivered across the NHS, and by sharing best practice between trusts, GIRFT identifies changes that will help improve care and patient outcomes, as well as delivering efficiencies such as the reduction of unnecessary procedures and cost savings.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer amongst females and accounts for around 15% of all newly diagnosed cancers in the UK. The GIRFT breast surgery report contains 17 recommendations, based on visits to 129 breast surgery units across England. Key recommendations include:
- Refining the breast cancer referral process and improving assessments
- Improving access to the full range of surgical techniques
- Reducing time spent in hospital
