Summary
Getting It Right First Time (GIRFT) is designed to improve the quality of care within the NHS by reducing unwarranted variations. By tackling variations in the way services are delivered across the NHS, and by sharing best practice between trusts, GIRFT identifies changes that will help improve care and patient outcomes, as well as delivering efficiencies such as the reduction of unnecessary procedures and cost savings.

Cardiology is one of the largest medical specialties, with approximately 6.1 million patients living with cardiovascular disease in England. Related healthcare costs are estimated at £7.4bn each year, while the wider annual cost to the English economy is estimated at £15.8bn. The GIRFT national report for cardiology contains 25 recommendations for improving services in England, within the context of COVID-19, and aims to:
- close gaps in provision.
- improve clinical pathways.
- improve access to imaging.
- make the most of the workforce.
