<p>
	In two studies, researchers found that doctors with high levels of burnout had between 45% and 63% higher odds of making a major medical error in the following three months, compared with those who had low levels.
</p>

<p>
	To ensure well-being and motivation at work, and to minimise workplace stress, people have three core needs, and all three must be met.
</p>

<p>
	A - Autonomy/control – the need to have control over our work lives, and to act consistently with our work and life values.
</p>

<p>
	B - Belonging – the need to be connected to, cared for, and caring of others around us in the workplace and to feel valued, respected and supported.
</p>

<p>
	C - Competence – the need to experience effectiveness and deliver valued outcomes, such as high-quality care.
</p>

<p>
	The review identified inspiring examples of organisations that meet these three core needs for doctors. An integrated, coherent intervention strategy will transform the work lives of doctors, their productivity and effectiveness, and thereby patient care and patient safety.

	The WorkSafeMed study combined the assessment of the four topics psychosocial working conditions, leadership, patient safety climate, and occupational safety climate in hospitals. Looking at the four topics provides an overview of where improvements in hospitals may be needed for nurses and physicians. Based on these results, improvements in working conditions, patient safety climate, and occupational safety climate are required for health care professionals in German university hospitals – especially for nurses.

<p>
	The high complexity model is intended for services that have more complex pathways e.g. chronic (more than one year) services in acute, mental health or community services, where patients may return for several follow up appointments at intervals which may change depending on how their condition progresses.
</p>

<p>
	You can use this model to inform decision making and planning, in supporting delivery of timely care to patients.

<p>
	The aim of the UK-wide survey was to obtain a snapshot of the structure of, and role-specific training and CPD provision for, the non medical, non-midwifery maternity workforce. The objectives were to:
</p>

<ul><li>
		determine the ratio of unregistered staff to registered midwives in the maternity services
	</li>
	<li>
		determine the number of maternity services where nursing associates were employed
	</li>
	<li>
		determine the number of maternity services where registered nurses were employed in areas other than neonatal care
	</li>
	<li>
		determine the areas of work for registered nurses in maternity care
	</li>
	<li>
		gather information about the role-specific training offered to non-midwives at induction and as CPD during employment.
	</li>
</ul><p>
	This survey is intended to add to the conversation on some aspects of the workforce and skill mix in maternity services. As a result of the findings the following recommendations are made:
</p>

<ul><li>
		the opportunity should be created for a stakeholder engagement event to disseminate findings and consider aspects requiring further exploration, which may include:
		<ul><li>
				future training needs analysis work to explore role-specific training for non-midwifery staff (registered or unregistered) in maternity services, to clarify what should be provided.
			</li>
		</ul></li>
	<li>
		to look at utilising these findings in the wider work being carried out within the RCN safe and effective staffing campaign (RCN 2019). Although the RCN campaign is focused on nursing, these survey results may inform work on both midwifery and nursing staffing.

<p>
	This project will involve an action research, whole team approach to effective management of fatigue in theatre and labour ward teams during the night shift. The interventions will involve educating night shift workers about the impact of fatigue on work performance, and holding focus groups to explore experiences of fatigue, and suggested ways of mitigating night shift tiredness. Ideas will then be tested out, before the strategy is finalised and implemented.
</p>

<p>
	During the testing, staff will use wearable activity monitors and an app, which will help demonstrate the impact of new processes.
</p>

<p>
	This participatory approach and the interventions should improve team working at night, with breaks and powernaps built into the work schedule. This may improve decision-making, the management of emergencies, patient and staff safety, and staff morale.
</p>

<p>
	This project is currently underway and will be completed in March 2020.
