Community hospitals are an important part of local health and care systems, yet there has been very little shared on their contribution during the pandemic. This report describes a project undertaken by the Community Hospitals Association (CHA) to capture the role and contribution of community hospitals during Covid-19. The focus of the project was to identify innovations and quality improvements that were prompted or accelerated by the pandemic.
It captured the experiences of staff at 20 healthcare organisations through online interviews, using an Appreciative Inquiry approach. Many healthcare professionals shared inspirational examples of how they provided vital, flexible, responsive and resilient services during the pandemic. The report includes case studies that can be shared widely across the UK in community hospitals and beyond.
The report recommends that in order to make the most of our community hospitals we need to be:
- Making decisions locally
- Benefiting from excellent leadership
- Recognising community hospitals as community assets
- Looking after our staff
