In this video, the team talk about how they have transformed the way they approach sepsis care by using a clinical decision support tool called E-sepsis to increase screening for sepsis and subsequent antibiotic administration. E-Sepsis sees integration of a number of clinical parameters including patient observations and laboratory results. It automatically alerts clinicians when it detects a patient with sepsis. This removes the need for manual intervention and e-sepsis prompts clinical action by the member of staff treating the patient.

	Key learning points

Make sure that all contributing stakeholders are fully involved from the outset. As well as the maternity service and the IT team, this project required involvement from the medical equipment team for the cardiotocograph devices and estates for wiring and wall mounting of equipment.

Understand the working environment thoroughly. Test the new equipment and how it is going to work in practice in a labour room. And if existing kit is used, ensure that it is fit for the new purpose. Ensure there is sufficient bandwidth for all of the new transmission of data.

A significant risk identified in the early planning stages was the process of using the equipment with the next patient. The previous patient has to be ‘dissociated’ before the new patient is associated to ensure that data goes to the correct patient record. This has to be managed carefully.

Equipment that takes advantage of wireless connectivity is more expensive but can last longer and give better patient experience – there is less risk of damage from wires being pulled out, and the patient can move around more freely.

The GDE blueprints are a structured collection of knowledge assets and associated methodology for using them. They highlight important ingredients needed for sustainable health improvements such as organisational leadership and culture, technical guidance, clinical and staff engagement as well as the people and processes required to deliver the benefits of technology.

They cover a range of digital initiatives such as using software to detect the risk of patients contracting sepsis, having a paperless A&E department or introducing e-prescribing across an organisation to improve safety and quality of care, clinical outcomes, and patient and staff experience.

Created by NHS Trusts, who are recognised for using digital technologies to support wider transformation, the GDE blueprints are step-by-step guides that can also be tailored by individual Trusts to suit their own local needs and requirements.

The team talk about an app that is now used across all wards in the Trust to measure the physical and therapeutic observation of service users. They explain how this app is helping identify deteriorating patients much earlier on, as well as freeing up more time for direct patient care and providing more accurate results.
