DESCRIPTION:\n	This innovative educational initiative was developed as a
direct and constructive response to the communication inadequacies expose
d by the Montgomery case\, and subsequent legislation. While it is not dif
ficult to give \"more information\" it is harder for surgeons and patients
to achieve a decision partnership. The ICONS workshop content has been in
formed by internationally recognised experts in Shared Decision Making\, b
y consensus among senior practising surgeons\, by patients and by professi
onal experts in risk management and risk communication. Delegates on the I
CONS workshops will acquire skills and knowledge to implement best practic
e in sharing the complex decisions surrounding informed consent. By partic
ipating in a workshop\, they will also contribute to the development of re
sources for future training in the important area of informed consent.\n\n
\n\n	Target audience\n\n\n\n	All grades of trainees\; SAS / LED / Trust Do
ctors\; Consultants. Non FRCS surgeons – Ophthalmologists\; Obstetrician
s and Gynaecologists.\n\n\n\n	Learning style\n\n\n\n	Focussed topic introd
uctory talks. Small group facilitated discussion tutorials based on review
of exemplar videos of consent and other patient doctor communication scen
arios.\n\n\n\n	Aims &amp\; objectives\n\n\n\n	\n The objectives of the co

stand the practical importance of the Montgomery decision.\n	\n	\n Identi
fy the key elements of a Shared Decision Making consultation.\n	\n	\n Dis
cuss options including surgery – elective and emergency.\n	\n	\n Employ
efficient methods of eliciting patient needs\, preferences and values in
a busy clinic.\n	\n	\n Understand the added value of patient activation b
