It evolved after he was invo lved in a patient’s death 16 years ago. This led to his “Damascus mo ment”\, as he had a realisation that the traditional ways of looking at improving patients safety were not working and a new mindset was needed.\n \n\n\n The course is based on his 23 years of clinical experience and exte nsive work looking into the best ways to provide safer care and how best t o implement the needed changes. The course has now been taken by over 3\,0 00 people and is different in many ways to other human factors courses\, i n that it looks at things from a clinician’s perspective. As opposed to those in the airline industry who can decide to just not fly a plane if co nditions are not ideal\, his course is based on how to provide safer care in difficult circumstances where care must be provided whatever the situat ion is.\n\n\n\n Course objectives:\n\n\n\n The course is aimed to give att endees a basic understanding of human factors and the importance of changi ng the culture to bring about improvements in care. As well as the traditi onal aspects of human factors such as teamworking and communication skills \, the course looks at how we can improve our decision making skills by re ducing cognitive bias.\n\n\n\n The day is based on interactive case discus sions. These are cases that he brings to the course as well attendees’ o wn examples – hence why no two courses are identical.\n\n\n\n Human fact ors courses run the risk of being dry and theoretical.
